1. President Muhammadu Buhari has said he cannot remove Mahmood Yakubu as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), because he would need a resolution by two-thirds majority of the Senate to do so.
President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, insisted there was no iota truth in the rumours in some quarters that the presidency had concluded plans to fire the INEC boss.
2. The All Progressives Congress, APC, National Caucus will today hold an emergency meeting in Abuja to discuss prevailing national issues.
Reports says the APC caucus, which is a statutory organ of the party, is chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari and has the Vice President and all the party’s former governors as members.
3. Unknown gunmen have reportedly murdered Boniface Okoloho, the All Progressives Congress chairman in Ohimini LGA of Benue State.
It was gathered that the late Okoloho was reportedly shot and killed yesterday by some yet-to-be-identified assailants, on his way home from a party function.
4. The Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Paul Enenche, has urged Nigerians to remain calm, following the postponement of Saturday’s elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Enenche urged Nigerians to turn out en masse and perform their civic responsibilities during the rescheduled elections.
5. The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), has directed its members nationwide to reduce petroleum pump price from N145 per litre to N140.
The National President of the association, Elder Chinedu Okworonkwo, in a statement on Sunday, said the marketers were expected to comply with the directive from Feb. 20 to Feb. 25.
6. The ward chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mr. Ayuk Ogar and three others in Bendeghe Ekiem Community in Etung Local Government Area of Cross River State have been reported dead.
They were reportedly killed shortly after a peace accord was signed on Saturday, February 16 in a gun battle between members of All Progressive Congress (APC) and People Democratic Party (PDP).
7. Eight persons were confirmed dead while a pregnant woman and a child sustained injuries in an accident involving a blue Toyota Corolla Sport car around Ewekoro area on Lagos/Abeokuta expressway.
Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the spokesperson, Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), who confirmed, explained that the accident which occurred around 12:50 p.m. was caused by excessive speeding and loss of control by the driver.
8. Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has no cogent reason to have postponed the elections originally scheduled for February 16.
Falana in a statement released on Sunday, stated that there are provisions for which an election can be postponed, but the reasons stated by INEC was not one of them.
9. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says not less than 1.8 million candidates would be registered for its 2019 UTME by the end of the registration exercise scheduled for Feb. 21.
The Board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, expressed satisfaction at the ongoing registration exercise nationwide, adding that so far, it had been smooth with little or no hitches.
10. The Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has expressed deep pain over recent unwarranted killings of innocent lives and destruction of property in Kajuru local government area of Kaduna State.
ACF through its national publicity secretary, Alhaji Muhammad Ibrahim Biu said it would not be tired of appealing to all aggrieved persons to always channel their grievances through due process of law rather than taking the law into their hands.
