Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

1. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Akwa Ibom State has described the recent military exercise tagged ‘Operation Show of Force’ carried out in some local government areas across the state as a ploy by the Army to rig elections for the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Saturday, March 9, 2019.

The party also condemned the alleged declaration of ten Local Governments as flashpoints by the Army, arguing that there was no basis for such action since the elections were conducted in the most peaceful manner in the state.

2. Former Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, has addressed reports on the leadership of All Progressives Congress, APC, making him the next Senate president

Akpabio on Sunday, said he has no plan with the APC leadership on being the next Senate President, but, however insisted that he did not lose Saturday’s election, and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare him winner.

3. Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has declared that he has sacked the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, for “anti-party activities”.

According to Okorocha, Oshiomhole did not have the power to remove a party member.

4. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has said that the life of the current House is still on until the next three months.

Dogara in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Mr Turaki Hassan, on Sunday in Abuja, said that pending issues before the House need urgent legislative attention, including the 2019 Appropriations Bill.

5. No fewer than 8,500 persons illegally employed into the Delta State Civil Service in 2015 have been uncovered by the state government, including 2,000 others parading falsified credentials.

It was gathered that they were alleged to have been employed by some aides to the immediate past governor of the state, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, after allegedly collecting between N200,000 to N300,000 from the unsuspecting job seekers, while the female ones were allegedly sexually exploited before they were given the job.

6. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to run an inclusive government in his second term.

Northern CAN, in a statement by its President, Yakubu Pam, said Buhari’s victory at the presidential election showed evidence of his uprightness and transparency in governance.

7. Some prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State on Sunday dumped the opposition party.

Report said among those who dumped the party were Mohammed Sani-Sidi, former Director General, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), former commissioners, legislators, permanent secretaries, local government chairmen and party officials.

8. The military has said certain powerful forces in Benue were responsible for recent attacks on communities in the state.

Maj-Gen Adeyemi Yekini, the Force Commander, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), on Sunday said such individuals were instigating violence as could be seen in the recent attacks on communities preceding major elections in the country.

9. The governor of Gombe state, Ibrahim Dankwambo, has reportedly escaped death.

The Governor’s convoy was said to have been attacked by thugs who set two cars ablaze.

10. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), says it will not rescind its decision on the use of biometrics in the conduct of its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

In the board’s weekly bulletin issued on Sunday in Lagos, JAMB said the importance of biometrics in the conduct of the board’s examination cannot be overemphasised.
