Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

1. A former Governor of Ogun State and Director-General of the Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation, Gbenga Daniel, said he is considering a request by his supporters, to lead them to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He told journalists after a meeting with his supporters from across Ogun State, that his supporters had made it clear to him that he could not quit politics right now.

2. A fire outbreak has rendered over 20 families homeless following the explosion of cooking gas cylinder in Opi Street by fish pond in Ugboroke community, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

The fire incident, which occurred at about 3pm on Sunday, razed down a makeshift building housing the families.

3. A Federal House of Representatives-elect, Garba Muhammad Butalawa, representing Kura, Madobi and Garun Mallam in Kano State, has died.

Garba , who contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), died at the weekend at Prime Clinic, Lamido Crescent, after a protracted illness.

4. The Police Command in Kaduna State on Sunday vowed to fish out the attackers of Nandu village of Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State and bring them to justice.

The Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Yakubu Sabo, said the command had mobilised operatives to the scene of the incident and taken the injured and dead to the hospital.

5. The Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, has said that suspended Justice Walter Onnoghen, remains the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Muhammad said he would step aside once the Code of Conduct Tribunal or the Appeal Court reverses Onnoghen’s matter.

6. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will continue with collation of results in Rivers State

INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mr. Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, explained that the commission will conclude the collation exercise in Rivers because it was not declared inconclusive.

7. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to immediately redeploy Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Obo Effanga.

The party in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu, said that the call for his redeployment became necessary to prevent the REC from skewing the forthcoming supplementary elections in favour of the opposition.

8. The Presidency has cautioned against the spewing of hate, incitement to violence and polarizing statements by some political leaders as some states brace up for supplementary elections prescribed by the National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The Presidency also rejected criticisms of President Muhammadu Buhari’s apparent disinterest in the upcoming elections in some states by party members who wrongfully assume that the President will abuse power by changing results to favour them.

9. Former president Goodluck Jonathan has said that he has no reason to quit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), or retire from politics for now.

In a statement on Sunday, through his Media Adviser, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan described the news as fake, saying that it was a calculated attempt to rubbish his person.

10. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said there is no exemption on biometric verification for all candidates of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

According to the board, biometric verification will be the only mode of admittance of candidates into its examination centres nationwide saying that examination officials must adhere strictly to the rules.
