1. Ikot-Abasi Local Council of Akwa Ibom State was during the week thrown into mourning after angry soldiers on duty at Utaewa water birch in the area reportedly killed one Otobong Jumbo, 45, a cement merchant. Report had it that one of the wives of the deceased, Enefiok Jumbo, was beaten by the soldiers and upon his husband’s intervention, he was hit severally with gun butts until he became unconscious and later died at the hospital.
2. The National leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has rejected the alleged anti-poor and anti-masses recruitment requirements of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Mr. Adeyemi Azeez, NANS National Public Relations Officer (PRO) made the position of the students’ body known in a statement on Sunday in Abuja. NANS called on NNPC to within the 72 hours withdraw all alleged anti-poor and anti-masses conditions.
3. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that there are plans by top officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to favour Governor Nyesom Wike during Monday’s resumption of collation of results of March 9 governorship and House of Assembly elections in Rivers State. In a statement on Sunday by the party’s State Publicity Secretary in Rivers, Chris Finebone, the party also alleged that what was happening in Rivers state was in complete fulfilment of the tripartite collaboration between Wike, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Obo Effanga and Administrative Secretary, Elder Etim Umoh.
4. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Sunday, accused the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, SAN, of plotting to scuttle the collation of results of Rivers State governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). It also cautioned Malami to restrain himself from being used to commit what it termed “unconstitutional acts” in the collation of results. PDP spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan disclosed this in a statement.
5. The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has dismissed the news of the revocation of his bail as announced recently by the Justice Binta Nyako led federal High Court in Abuja, describing it as silly and meaningless. Kanu in a special broadcast on Saturday night also dared the federal government to come for him if they can.
6. The Federal High Court in Lagos State has given the go-ahead to Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in its suit seeking: “an order for leave to apply for an order of mandamus compelling the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola SAN to disclose the names of the contractors that defaulted in the handling of power projects.
7. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its Katsina State governorship candidate in the March 9 elections, Yakubu Lado, have formally filed a petition before the election petitions tribunal. They are challenging the emergence of incumbent Governor Aminu Masari of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as winner in the fiercely-contested polls.
8. Senator representing Zamfara Central District in the National Assembly, Kabiru Marafa, has advised the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, to stand by the truth as regards the party’s 2018 October’s botched primaries in Zamfara state. Marafa, who is Chairman of Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), gave the advice in a letter addressed to Oshiomhole during the weekend in reaction to his reported endorsement of the Zamfara APC faction.
9. Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said that the call by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to install an all-APC leadership in the National Assembly, is “no longer democracy”. Hunkuyi stated this while speaking on Channels TV.
10. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has confirmed that it had commenced probe of federal government parastatals. This was contained in a statement on Sunday by Rasheedat A. Okoduwa, ICPC spokesperson. It said a reasonable number of petitions received by it were on infractions committed in the process of implementing the budgetary provisions and allocations of Capital Development Fund and Personnel Cost.
