Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the death of least five persons in Saturday evening’s suicide bombing believed to have been carried out by Boko Haram. It said no fewer that 46 persons sustained various degrees of injury when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was triggered at popular Muna Garage in Maiduguri, Borno State. NEMA spokesman in North-East, Mr. Abdulkadir Ibrahim on Sunday disclosed that the attack was carried out by two bombers.

2. Report claims that Herdsmen, in the early hours of Sunday, attacked Bagana community in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State, claiming six lives. An eyewitness claimed the attackers, with assorted weapons, came in their numbers and were selectively burning houses and shooting residents.

3. The Chairman of Wukari Local Government Council of Taraba, Mr Daniel Adi, has confirmed that 10 people were killed and several others injured in the ongoing clashes between Jukun and Tiv ethnic groups. The Jukun and TIV ethnic groups share a common boundary between Benue and Taraba states. In an interview with newsmen in Wukari on Sunday, Adi who called for calm, further disclosed that more than nine communities had so far been razed and displaced from the Kente ward of the affected area.

4. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Sunday, raised the alarm, accusing the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi of connivance with the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami to use the instrumentality of the Supreme Court to wreck constitutional crisis in the concluded Rivers State governorship election. PDP spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Abuja.

5. The Court of Appeal in Akure, has affirmed the eligibility of Senator Ademola Adeleke, Osun State’s governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to stand for election as Governor. Presided over by Justice M.A Danjuma, the court dismissed the appeal against the judgment of an Osun State High Court sitting in Oshogbo, which had confirmed the eligibility of Adeleke to contest for the governorship of Osun State. The court had Justices R.A Abdullahi and P.A Mahmoud as members of the panel.

6. The management of the Federal University of Technology (FUTO) in Owerri, Imo State, has confirmed that three out of the four students, who died at the Sunshine Castle Hostel, Ihiagwa, after allegedly taking tramadol, Indian hemp and had foursome were students of the school. The school’s Public Relations Officer, Uche Nwelue, said after investigation, the university was able to identify three of the victims. It, however, said the only female student was not from the school.

7. The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the killing of some persons in Mgboduohia village, Rumuorlumeni, in Obio-Akpor Local government area of the State. The victims were reportedly killed in a cult clash in Mgboduohia when armed hoodlums invaded the community early Sunday shooting their targets. The hoodlums, according to eyewitnesses, moved from house to house in search of rival cultists in the area and succeeded in killing at least eight of their target. Confirming the incident, spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni said the killings were as a result of clashes between rival cult groups.

8. The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), says it will soon commence probe of banks over stamp duties collection as it expects to recover more than N100 billion from the probe. A statement by Mr Ibrahim Mohammed, the commission’s spokesperson on Sunday in Abuja, said the probe would involve a forensic investigation of the funds that had so far been collected as stamp duty by 22 Deposit Money Banks (DMB) from 2000 to 2018.

9. The Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Mr Rasaki Musibau and six others were abducted by unknown gunmen on Saturday night at about 8p.m., on Iwoye Bridge, along the Itoikin-Epe Road, Ikorodu. The Lagos State Police Command’s spokesman, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, saying that the police were on the trail of the abductors.

10. A former captain and coach of the Super Eagles, Christian Chukwu, is seriously down with an undisclosed ailment. This was revealed by Benson Ejindu, the patron of former Enugu Rangers players association while speaking to newsmen. Ejindu also revealed Chukwu will be needing about $50,000, to be flown to the United States of America to undergo surgery and for other medical treatment.
