Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning


Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. President Jonathan had yesterday lamented the failure of the PDP to win the Saturday’s Osun election, saying that it was painful to have lost even after the party had done the needful to ensure the Party’s victory. Jonathan made the statement through his Special Adviser on Political Affairs, Prof. Rufa’i Alkali, while conducting a facility tour on Goodluck 2 Goodluck (G2G) 2015 Project at its national headquarters in Abuja.

2. A group, Enugu Rescue Group, ERG, has condemned the decision of the seven-man panel set up to probe the Deputy Goverbnor, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi, to bar journalists from being part of its proceedings. It further faulted the continuous mopping up of newspapers and magazines criticising the actions of the state government in Enugu, the state capital. The group, made the statement through its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Martin Okenwa.

3. The Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja on Sunday announced new procedures to protect worshippers against likely spread of the Ebola virus in the church. The procedures include the administration of the Holy Communion on the palm of communicants instead of placing it on their tongue. The new procedure was announced on behalf of the Arch Diocese of Abuja by Rev. Fr. Moses Jimbili, at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Nyanya.

4. Former Vice President and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Atiku Abubakar, while congratulating governor Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola on his victory at the last Saturday guber election in Osun State said his victory was an indication of his acceptability and popularity amongst the people.

5. SIX kidnapping suspects were, weekend, paraded by the Department of State Services, DSS, Ebonyi State Command. Report says the suspects allegedly abducted and killed former Coordinator of Okposi Development Centre in Ohaozara Local Government Area, Mr. Ihebunandu Okorie, in March. The suspects are identified as ;Ebere, 32; Odichimma, 30; Chukwudi, 32; Amos, 23; Peter, 30 and Adamu.

6. Governor Tanko Almakura of Nasarawa state has explained that the move to impeach him by the 20 members House of Assembly of the state was born out of their own selfish desire as they did not follow any single due process in their several attempts to impeach him. The governor spoke in Lafia, the state capital on Sunday.

7. The National Conference will on Monday (today) resume sitting. Delegates will today reconvene to consider the final report of the conference. The conference’s Assistant Secretary, Media and Communications, Mr. James Akpandem, had disclosed on Friday that the final report of the conference was ready.

8. A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Ade Ajayi is dead. Ajayi diad at the age of 85, at the University College Hospital, Ibadan on Saturday.

9. The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives have stated that both the federal and the state government were not doing enough in the ongoing battle against the Ebola virus. The doctors and nurses said at separate news conferences in Lagos on Sunday, that the government had yet to put in place adequate measures to protect health workers who have volunteered to manage those infected by the deadly virus. The state NMA, through its chairman, Dr. Tope Ojo, had challenged the federal and Lagos state governments to provide protective kits and address the issue of hazard allowance for doctors, nurses and other health workers who may want to assist in the treatment and care of victims.

10. Police have arraigned 20 suspects, including a 54-year-old woman, Susan Viana, in connection with the Arepo oil pipeline vandalism and the killing of nine policemen, which occurred in May this year. The suspects were arraigned on Thursday before Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court in Lagos.
