Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

1. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari did not write to the National Assembly, to inform them of his trip to the United Kingdom.

PDP’s Deputy National Chairman, Yemi Akinwunmi on Sunday, said the President ought to have notified the lawmakers, indicating his mission abroad and transferring power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

2. The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, has insisted that his principal can perform his duty from anywhere in the world.

In response to the claim by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that the president absconded from duty, Shehu insisted that Buhari didn’t make a mistake by taking off without writing a letter to the National Assembly. The Constitution says 21 days is the back off point. That is where infringement is caused.

3. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed a criminal charge against Bauchi State Governor-elect, Senator Bala Mohammed, at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a case marked CR/177/17, the governor-elect is charged with accepting gratification in form of a house valued at N550 million on 2599 & 2600 Cadastral Zone, AO4 Asokoro District, Abuja, from Aso Savings & Loans Plc in 2014.

4. Barely one week the National Judiciary Council (NJC) waded into the impasse between the Executive and the Judiciary in Kogi State, workers under the auspice of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has called off its over four months strike in the state.

The suspension of the strike, according to a statement signed by the Kogi State Chairman Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Comrade Emmanuel Waniko and Secretary, Comrade Sule Suberu, Sunday evening, will take effect from Monday 29th April 2019.

5. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected a move by the Federal Government of Nigeria to use the 2019 personnel verification exercise to forcefully incorporate lecturers into the Integrated Personnel Payroll System (IPPS).

ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi in a letter written to chapter chairmen of the union in Ibadan on Sunday by the Chairman of University of Ibadan chapter, Professor Deji Omole, directed members not to fill the personnel verification form.

6. President Muhammadu Buhari has said industrial actions by the Academic Staff Union of Universities are inimical to the health and progress of the higher institutions in Nigeria.

According to the President, the action was worrisome and disheartening.

7. The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN), Bauchi state chapter, has called on security agencies and government to tackle the activities of outlawed group, Yan Ba Beli, that randomly kills its members across the state.

Alhaji Sadiq Ahmed, MACBAN secretary in the state, who made the call at the funeral of two of the latest victims of extra-judicial killing in Bauchi on Sunday, warned that if the activities of the group is not tackled, it will get out of hand and will pose a great security threat in the state.

8. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Sunday accused the President Muhammadu Buhari-led presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of being desperate to remain in power at all costs.

It claimed that the presidency and APC were desperate to remain in power so as to continue to “exploit Nigerians, protect APC corrupt leaders, cover their incompetence and conceal the humongous sleazes in their administration.”

9. The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has rekindled hopes that he will reclaim his mandate at the tribunal.

The former Vice President said this in a statement to DAILY POST on Sunday signed by his Special Assistant on Youth and Support Groups Ambassador Aliyu Bin Abbas, assured millions of his supportersin the last elections, that victory was sure.

10. The Southeast caucus of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has demanded a review of the zoning arrangement ahead of the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly.

The zone took the stand during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Enugu on Saturday, kicked against the decision, calling for a review.
