Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. No fewer than 41 persons including two children have died after a Russian passenger plane made an emergency landing on Sunday. The Aeroflot aircraft burst into flames at Sheremetyevo, Moscow busiest airport after hitting the runway on Sunday evening. In a video, the plane, a Sukhoi SSJ-100 regional jet, landed with large flames engulfing the rear section, while passengers were seen fleeing the aircraft using emergency slides.

2. There was pandemonium on Sunday in the University town, Anyigba in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi state when two rival groups engaged themselves in a fierce gun duel, killing one Ismaila Yakubu Agba, suspected to be the youth leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Although the reason behind the exchange of gunfire which led to the death of the youth leader is yet to be established, there are reports that two rival political parties were involved in the exchange of gunfire.

3. President Muhammadu Buhari, Sunday returned to Nigeria, after a private visit to the United Kingdom. The presidential jet touched down at about 6.20pm at the presidential wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport in Abuja. Buhari had been away from the country for 10 days, resulting in speculations that his health was deteriorating, and would not return within the given 10 days.

4. Sa’ad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto, has declared Monday as the first day of Ramadan fasting in Nigeria. Simwal, a member of the moonsighting committee of Nigeria disclosed this while quoting the Sultan. According to him, the Sultan declared Monday the beginning of Ramadan after the special moon for the month of Ramadan was sighted.

5. The presidency has reacted to allegations of rape against police personnel in Abuja. Some ladies, who were convicted by a mobile court for alleged prostitution had narrated how they were harassed, molested and assaulted by men of the Nigeria Police in Abuja. On Sunday, Laolu Akande, spokesman to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, confirmed that investigation had commenced.

6. Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has been warned, along with his agents, to stay away from Nsu Ceramics and Tiles Industry sited in Nsu Ehime Mbano, or face the full wrath of the community. The Nsu clan, consisting of four autonomous communities, also at the weekend issued similar words of caution to members of the security agencies not to allow themselves to be used by the outgoing administration or by its agents to perpetuate and sustain the alleged ongoing looting of state assets by alleged cronies of the governor.

7. The Nigerian Army on Sunday announced a ban on the use of motorcycles in the North West region. It said the ban under exercise HARBIN KUNAMA which seeks to wipe out banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities in the zone, affects Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Kastina Sokoto, Zamfara and Niger states. The Army said it would not tolerate the use of motorcycles within the hinterland, particularly around the forests where the armed bandits and kidnappers hibernate.

8. Unknown gunmen in the early hours of Sunday, abducted Mrs Suzzy Nathan, Permanent Secretary, Taraba Ministry of Water Resources from her home in Jalingo. The Police Public Relations Officer in Taraba, DSP David Misal, confirmed the incident to newsmen. Misal said the command was deploying every intelligence to establish if it was a kidnapping case since no contact had been made claiming to be behind the abduction.

9. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday said its leadership and elected federal legislators have not taken any official position on who to support for the position of presiding officers of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. In a statement by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP said it was still consulting with its members-elect and no official position has been taken on the issue.

10, The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was engaging in conspiracy against it at the election tribunal. The African Action Congress (AAC) candidate is challenging the victory of Governor Nyesom Wike at the polls. According to the PDP, the Commission is yet to assign the defence of Rivers State governorship election to its counsel. Chairman, Rivers PDP, Elder Felix Obua, said INEC deliberately refused to assign the case to any lawyer, knowing that entering of defence is within a specified time.
