Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. Following last Friday’s bomb blast that rocked Kuje and Nyanya in Abuja, President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday visited victims of the blasts at the National Hospital where they are currently receiving medical attention, promising to settle all their medical bills. Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State and some top government officials were with the President on the visit.

2. Following his recent comment on the former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has warned the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, to be weary of his utterances against the former Governor, else it would be forced to expose him ( Secondus).

3. The Association of Fulani Chiefs and the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria have condemned the agitation by the pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, that Fulani herdsmen be sacked from the South-West. The herdsmen consequently denied that a former Secretary of the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae, was kidnapped by Fulani herdsmen. The denial is coming from the Chairman of MACBAN, Ondo State chapter, Bello Garba.

4. The presidency has disclosed that the Federal Government has signed a $2.3bn assistance agreement with the United States Agency for International Development. The aim of the agreement is to fight extreme poverty in the country. This was disclosed by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande.

5. Following last Friday night bomb explosions in Abuja, IDPs camps in Abuja are reported to have been infiltrated by some insurgents. Consequent upon this suspicion, the police are reportedly combing the camps as part of its investigation into the incident.

6. Immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed claims by Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State that his administration spent N64 billion to organize Nigeria’s independence celebrations for three years, saying he only spent N332.6 within the three years. Jonathan reacted through his former Minister of National Planning, Minister/Deputy Chairman, National Planning Commission, Dr. Abubakar Sulaiman.

7. The presidency has reacted to criticisms trailing the recent ministerial list, saying that those against the already submitted names were crooks that cannot work with the president, and may want to put up an unnecessary fight. This was according to the the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

8. The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has called on president Muhammadu Buhari to reopen investigation into those alleged to be sponsoring Boko Haram in the country, advising that if the sponsors of the group are not brought to book, the group will continue deal blows on the nation. The NLC spoke through its President, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, on Sunday.

9. Following abysmal performance of English side, Liverpool over the years, it has now sacked Brendan Rodgers as manager of the club. The sack which takes immediate effect was announced in a joint Fenway Sports Group statement from principal owner John W Henry, chairman Tom Werner and president Mike Gordon.

10. For stealing her mistress’ sets of underwear and other valuables, an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a housemaid, identified simply as Vivian, to two months’ imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to the crime.
