Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian newspapers:

1. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Sunday declared the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu, as the winner of the poll. The Returning Officer, Prof Abdul-Ganiyu Ambali, announced that Akeredolu got 244, 842 votes to beat his closest rival, Eyitayo Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party who polled 150, 380 votes.

2. More than 20 Boko Haram insurgents were killed while many fled due to the superior power of the soldiers on Saturday after the convoy of the Caretaker Chairman of Gwoza local government area of Borno State, Hon Saeed Salisu Sambo, was ambushed by the insurgents. The incident happened around Bama town while he was on his way from Gwoza to Maiduguri. Six military men providing cover for him were injured in the attack.

3. The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, worldwide on Sunday condemned the continued denial of the killing of its members by the Nigerian government, military and other security agencies, urging world leaders to visit youtube and see for themselves how they had suffered brutality in the hands of the military. This is contained in a statement issued by Emma Powerful, the group’s Spokesman.

4. The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the just concluded Ondo governorship election, Eyitayo Jegede, has said he would soon make his position regarding the outcome of the election public, as he is still studying and checking the processes that led to his opponent’s victory. Jegede was addressing the press after INEC’s announcement.

5. It has been a verbal war between Jimoh Ibrahim and Femi Fani-Kayode over the outcome of the Ondo election. While Ibrahim said those who want to win an election should pay FFK not to support them, FFK said Jimoh was the judah that sold his party because of his inordinate ambition.

6. Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has claimed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), connived with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), to give the Ondo Governorship election away to the PDP, saying the commission deliberately replaced the name of PDP candidate with the wrong one till the last minute when it was obvious the APC had advantage over the PDP.

7. Report says a man who faked his own kidnap in order to do away with his company’s 50,000 dollars has been arrested in Lagos by the police. The man identified as Femi Akintola was asked to withdraw the money from a UBA bank in Marina but came back with the story that he was dispossessed of the sum by his kidnappers. Police, however, arrested him and recovered some of the canceled dollars.

8. Some gunmen, believed to be Niger Delta militants, Sunday blew up the Abura oil pipeline operated by the NPDC around Otu-Jeremi in Ughelli South LGA of Delta State. Report says the incident happened at the early hour of Sunday.

9. The DG of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, on Sunday, said at least, 200 persons have been displaced in Niger State following the activities of cattle rustlers in the state.

10. Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho may get another ban from the FA after he behave unruly when a yellow card was shown to Paul Pogba during their 1-1 draw with West Harm on Sunday. Mourinho was sent to the stands after he angrily kicked a water bottle in protest of the referee’s decision.
