Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Kpotun Idris, has disclosed that over 20, 000 police officers, three helicopters and 20 gunboats would be deployed in Rivers State for the State and National Assembly for the coming rerun elections. The IGP said the police maintained high standard on peaceful conduct of elections recently as exemplified in Edo and Ondo States.

2. The Nigerian Army “Operation Python Dance’’ in the South-East has disclosed that some of its road blocks will be dismantled to facilitate free flow of traffic during the Yuletide. Deputy Director, Public Relations of 82 Division Nigerian Army, Enugu, Col. Musa Sagir, disclosed this while on patrol with newsmen at the River Niger Bridge head, Onitsha and Awka, on Sunday.

3. The Super Falcons have returned to Nigeria after a successful outing in Cameroon where they won their 10th African Women Cup of Nations title. The Falcons touched down at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Sunday evening, and may proceed to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari anytime soon.

4. Report says the police on Sunday repelled thugs attack on the secretariat of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Kaduna state chapter allegedly carried out by some supporters of the embattled Senator Shehu Sani. The Acting State Secretary of the APC, Yahaya Pate, said the hoodlums arrived the secretariat of the party along Ali Akilu Road at about 11:00am, but were overpowered by the police.

5. The Nigerian Army has dispelled insinuation in some quarters that “Operation Python Dance” inaugurated on Monday last week in the South-East geopolitical zone was targeted at the Igbo by inflicting harm and hardship on the people. The Deputy Director, Public Relations, 82 Division, Col. Sagir Musa, stated this on Sunday.

6 .The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ekiti State has again warned governor Ayodele Fayose to forget any hope of joining the party from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as such move will not be welcomed. A statement the state Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, on Sunday, advised Fayose to discard the hope of seeking refuge in APC knowing that he cannot survive as an opposition.

7. The Presidency on Sunday said the Economic team of President Muhammadu Buhari was strong and competent enough to transform the nation’s economy. The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Vice President, Laolu Akande, said this in Abuja. Akande who was reacting to the allegation in some quarters that the country is in recession because the economic team was incompetent, insisted that the team was made up of competent individuals.

8. The European Union, EU, has warned against the option of force to address militant activities in the restive Niger Delta region. While it agreed that punishment of those who break the law was necessary, the EU said military option alone will proffer no solution to the crisis. Head of EU Delegation in Nigeria, Ambassador Michel Arrion, gave the warning, weekend, when he visited the Executive Chairman, Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, in Abuja.

9. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has ordered the troops serving in the North-East to immediately go into the final aggressive action and comprehensive sweep of the operational theatre in order to bring to end the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents. Buratai made the call in a message to the troops, on Sunday in Abuja.

10. Former President, Goodluck Jonathan was conspicuously absent from yesterday’s visit of former Presidents and Vice Presidents of Christian extraction to the annual thanksgiving of the Villa chapel. The event held at the Chapel auditorium. Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd), former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Former Head of Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan, Vice President, Alex Ekwueme, former Chief of General Staff, Rear Admiral Ebitu Ukiwe (retd), General Oladipo Diya (retd )and some service presidential aides attended the event. No reason was, however, given for Jonathan’s absence.
