1. President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday wrote to the National Assembly to inform them of his desire to extend his leave indefinitely in order to complete and receive the results of a series of tests recommended by his doctors. The request has become a subject of discussion in the social media as many are now demanding a better explanation as to the true health status of Mr President.
2. The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon came from behind to defeat the Pharoahs of Egypt 2-1 to win the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Gabon. The Pharaohs took the lead in the first-half through a goal by Mohamed Elneny, but Cameroun equalized and scored the second in the extra time of the game.
3. Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is trying to stifle the right to freedom of expression, like former presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo, General Sani Abacha, General Ibrahim Babangida, and others. He also criticized the Nigeria Police’s plan to stop the #IStandWithNigeria protest which was initially scheduled to hold February 6 in Lagos and Abuja.
4. Report says Gunmen Suspected to be members of islamic sect, Boko Haram terrorists in a convoy of vans and motorcycles Sunday took over Sasawa town in Yobe State after a fierce battle with troops. According to locals, the insurgents came in droves and sacked the troops stationed in the town.
5. The Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has said that only his principal can speak about details of his health. Adesina, who was speaking to Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, urged Nigerians to pray for the president, stating that it will get to a point, when Buhari will have to address the nation concerning his health status.
6. Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, on Sunday denied reports that he said President Muhammadu Buhari won’t return home because of faulty aircraft. Lai Mohammed, in a terse statement issued by his media aide, Segun Adeyemi, insisted he did not speak with anyone on Buhari’s movement.
7. Senior Special Assistant to the president on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu,has urged Nigerians to dismiss speculations on the whereabouts of his principal. According to Shehu, Buhari is at the Nigerian High Commission in the United Kingdom and not in a hospital or a secret location. He said he spoke with the doctors who told him Buhari was doing fine.
8. National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to make public his health status as a mark of respect for Nigerians. Reacting to the delay in the President’s return to Nigeria from the United Kingdom, PDP said it was also wrong for Buhari to send letter to the National Assembly, extending his leave, without telling Nigerians when he would resume.
9. A coalition of Civil Society organizations under the umbrella of Citizens Action to Take Back Nigeria (CATBAN), has petitioned the Inspector General of Police and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) over alleged rent scam of N630 million involving Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, Speaker House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara and their deputies. The group has given the police boss a seven-day ultimatum to arrest and persecute the National Assembly leadership over the allegation or Nigerians will be mobilised to ensure citizens arrest.
10. Report says two worker got stuck while cleaning an underground fuel tank at the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency end of the Lagos Badagry Expressway. The victims, Kazeem Rufai and another man, were rushed to the Badagry General Hospital. The report further revealed that while Rufai survived and is receiving treatment at the hospital, the other victim could not make it.
