Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Over thirty persons were on Sunday reportedly burnt to death as fire engulfed a section of the Calabar Free Trade Zone (CFTZ). Report also claimed over 30 others suffered various degrees of burns in the incident. The tragic incident, emanated from LINC OIL & GAS, around 1.20 am on Sunday when people were scooping fuel.

2. The West African Examination Council (WAEC) on Sunday dismissed speculations that the release date for the May/June 2017 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results may be extended. The exam body confirmed that the results were ready and would be released on Wednesday, July 19 by the Head of the Nigeria National Office, Mr Olu Adenipekun.

3. Nigeria’s former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke once allegedly threatened to reveal everything that transpired in the controversial fraudulent transactions between her and co-conspirators, Kola Aluko and Jide Omokore, saying they will all go down together. She made the comment in a recorded telephone conversation, obtained by the prosecutors probing the corruption allegations against her.

4. A female lawyer from Kogi State, Rabiah Ozavize Ovosi, who was kidnapped on Friday, has been released by her abductor. The legal practitioner regained her freedom Sunday evening but the family source who broke the news did not give details as to whether ransom was paid or not.

5. The coalition of northern youths has agreed to review the October 1 ”quit notice” issued to the Igbos living in the region. This follows a meeting held in the weekend by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council and the northern coalition with a view to charting a common course for peaceful co-existence of various groups in all parts of the country. They, however, insisted that Nnamdi Kanu must be punished over his agitation.

6. The camp of the home-based Super Eagles is expected to be opened on Thursday ahead of their preparation for their second round 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against either Benin Republic or Togo. This was announced on the Super Eagles official Twitter handle on Sunday.

7. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said it has established new methods of admission. JAMB, in a statement signed by its Head of Public Relations, Mr Fabian Benjamin, explained that it was to ensure fairness irrespective of tribe, religion and it is determined to meet the expectations of Nigerians.

8. Report has claimed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to seize a mansion, reportedly owned by Kola Aluko in Dubai, 48 hours after the US Department of Justice released details of how part of the $1.5billion oil production contracts funds were laundered. According to the report, the commission will also apply for the forfeiture of two houses belonging to Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

9. Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Sunday deposed the suspended Baale of Shangisha in Magodo, Chief Yusuf Ogundare for faking his abduction which allegedly took place on July 5 along Center for Management Development (CMD) Road in Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of the State.

10. Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has written to the Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, demanding the immediate release of the report of the investigative panel on corruption allegations against the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr David Babachir Lawal and Director-General, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mr. Ayo Oke. The governor demanded that the Acting President must “act expeditiously on the report”, saying he will approach the law court to compel the Acting President to release and act on the report if he fails to do so.
