Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

1. Gunmen on Sunday allegedly invaded the residence of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, in Abia State, killing five persons and injuring several others.

While the pro-Biafra group claimed the attack was carried out by the Nigerian troops, the Army in a swift response denied ever sending its men to attack Kanu’s home.

2. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, has announced that Nigeria might, in no distant time, suffer scarcity of cow meat.

According to him, this could be attributed to the quantum of cows consumed daily without commensurate calving.

3. Wife of Gilbert Nnaji, the senator representing Enugu East Senatorial District and the Chairman, Senate Committee on Communications, Mrs. Ann Nnaji is dead.

According to Egbon Mon-Charles, the Senator’s Media Adviser, Mrs. Nnaji died in a foreign hospital after a long battle with an undisclosed ailment.

3. The Senator representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as the father of unarmed robbers in the federal legislature.

The Senator said people like Obasanjo were the real problems Nigeria has.

4. The presidency has confirmed that President Muhammadu Buhari has been scheduled to address the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in the United States.

Buhari is listed as number seven on the provincial list of speakers during the UNGA, which is taking place on Tuesday, September 19, 2017.

5. The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has described Nigeria as a country that is stagnant and without development.

Wike therefore urged the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government to urgently address the “massive” electoral irregularities imposed by the administration on Nigerians, rather than focus on fighting hate speeches with fluid definition.

6. The Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Abdullahi, has replied those asking members of the national assembly to disclose their salaries and allowances.

He said it was disrespectful for anyone to ask the senators of the federal republic to disclose how much they earn.

7. Former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar has called on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress administration to fulfill its promise to Nigerians to make them feel safe again.

According to the former VP, the current government has not really fulfilled its promise it made during the electioneering campaign on security.

8. Arik Air Limited has filled a N20 billion suit against the Nigerian government and Ethiopian Airlines over ‘negotiation’ for the takeover of the airline.

The suit, instituted at the Federal High Court, Lagos against Ethiopian Airlines, the Federal Ministry of Transportation and the Attorney General of the Federation, was filed by Arik Air’s counsel, Mr Babajide Koku (SAN).

9. The apex Igbo scio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has asked the federal government to leave Nnamdi Kanu alone, stating that Kanu and his group is peaceful and not a terrorist group.

The group described the activities of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as non-violent and should not have attracted so many reactions from the federal government and the youths of the North.

10. No fewer than 20 communities have been ravaged by flood in Agatu local government of Benue State, following the torrential raindrops in the area throughout last week.

This has left scores of the villagers, who are greatly farmers homeless, while crops and livestock were destroyed in large numbers.
