Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Power Dynamos striker, Alex N’gonga’s family home in Chimwemwe in Kitwe has been attacked by thugs after Zambia’s 1-0 defeat to Nigeria in their 2018 World Cup qualifier match in Uyo on Saturday. Report says the thugs damaged two roofing sheets of the building, claiming N’gonga of missed scoring chances that crashed Zambia’s hopes of qualifying to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

2. The Nigerian Army on Sunday reportedly raided the Abia home of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, said the soldiers claimed they were searching for ‘technical items. He alleged that they left with items such as television sets, generator and clothes.

3. The Akwa Ibom State Government on Sunday said nobody died in the stampede at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo during the World Cup Qualifier match on Saturday. A statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Charles Udoh, confirmed that people sustained varying degrees of injury in the stampede but that no life was lost.

4. The Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, was on Sunday shut indefinitely following a violent protest by students over sudden deaths of two undergraduates. Report claims the students reportedly complained of malaria fever and were rushed to the school’s health centre, but their condition was said to have later aggravated, leading to their deaths on Saturday. This angered the students who went into protest.

5. Following the outbreak of Monkeypox in Bayelsa State, the government has intensified public enlightenment ‎in order to curb the spread of the viral disease. The government urged residents of the state to report all suspected cases of the disease by using hotlines 08066987752 and‎ 08035474676, to get rapid response team.‎

6. Watford forward Isaac Success was arrested after he reportedly demanded the refund of the cash he paid four escorts for a hotel romp after spending the night at a lap-dancing club in London’s West End last month. Escort Alexis Domerge claimed the footballer angrily asked for his money back after a 90-minute romp. They are alleging assault.

7. The Initiator and Chairman, Movement for Nigeria’s Total Transformation, Chief Areoye Oyebola, has condemned the fat salaries of the Nigerian lawmaker, saying that it’s unthinkable and very disheartening that a senator, not minding the grinding poverty of Nigerians, earns $1.7m a year, which is far higher than the $400,000 yearly income of the United States’ President.

8. Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has alleged that a total of $30billion has gone missing under President Muhammadu Buhari. Fani-Kayode in a series of tweets on Sunday, gave a breakdown of the figures from the year 1977 to date.

9. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, on Sunday, said it would partner with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to conduct public examination through Computer Based Test, CBT, for Nigerians abroad. The examination board also said universities that charged more than N2,000 from applicants for its post-UTME examination will be made to refund the excess payment.

10. The desk officer in charge of Operation Python Dance in Abia State, has confirmed that troops raided the family residence of Nnamdi Kanu on Sunday. He also disclosed that they were searching for weapons and that no household items were removed from Kanu’s home. The things removed, according to him were technical items as well as the arrest of someone with a weapon in the compound.
