Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Presidency on Sunday dismissed reports that $25bn worth of oil contracts were awarded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). It also denied insinuations in certain quarters that $25bn is missing from NNPC account. This was contained in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande, on Sunday.

2. The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III on Sunday declared the National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Chief Gani Adams as the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo (Generalissimo) of Yorubaland. Gani took over the position from the Late MKO Abiola. Since his death in 1998, the position of the Aare Ona Kakanfo (Generalissimo), head of Yoruba warriors had been vacant until Sunday’s declaration.

3. Mallam Isah Dansallah, an associate of former vice president, Atiku Abubakar and Simon Dogari, ex-speaker of Taraba state House of Assembly, have defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Dansallah, a founding member of the APC, explained that he defected due to what he called lack of good governance by the ruling party.

4. The Nigerian Army has declared that it has ended it’s operation in the Southeast. General Officer Commanding (GOC), 82 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Adamu Baba Abubakar, speaking on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff. Lieutenant General TY Buratai formally declared the end of Exercise EGWU EKE 11. The ceremony took place ​Saturday night ​in Sector 1 Tactical Headquarters at Umuahia, Abia State​, ​with the traditional activation of camp fire to formally signify the successful completion of the exercise.

5. The law firm of Fein & DelValle PLLC has announced that it, is drafting a criminal indictment against Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari and Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusfu Buratai, for genocide and crimes against humanity under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. The firm said in a statement issued at the weekend in Washington, D.C. USA, that it is pursuing the case on behalf of Biafrans who ‘covet justice – the dead, the living, and those yet to be born.”

6. Immediate past Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Taiye Haruna has passed away. Haruna died Saturday night in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. The cause of his death is unknown. The late Haruna was buried in line with Islamic rite in his hometown, Owo, Ondo State, Southwest Nigeria.

7. Report says gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen on Saturday killed about six persons in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, while also burning down several houses. The incident was said to have happened in Taagbe village, near Kent Academy in the Bassa LGA. This is coming barely 24 hours after the imposition of curfew by Governor Simon Lalong.

8. The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, on Sunday, said it was imperative for the country to borrow more in the short term to deliver critical infrastructural projects such as roads, rail and power. According to her, Nigeria currently has one of the lowest debt-to-Gross Domestic Product figures in the world. She was,however, quick to say that the administration has no plan to go into massive borrowing as it cannot sustain such.

9. Aso Villa Clinic has insisted it did not receive any capital allocation in 2017. Permanent Secretary of the State House, Jalal Arabi, said this in a statement issued on Sunday. Arabi said this could be verified from the Ministries of Finance and Budget and National Planning.

10. A student of the Kogi State Polytechnic, Miss Adebanjo Adetutu, has been kidnapped. Miss Adedutu who is an Higher National Diploma (HNDII) Student, from the Department of Office Technology Management (OTM) of the institution was kidnapped along Itakpe Lokoja Okene road on her way to her hometown in Ogun state after her first semester exams.
