Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Permanent Secretary, State House, Abuja, Mr. Jalal Arabi, admitted on Thursday that wife of the President, Aisha, was right on her recent comments on the poor state of the State House Medical Centre. He said he confirmed Aisha’s comments when he became ill and discovered that nothing was working in the clinic.

2. An ex-Administrative Secretary with the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mr. Christian Nwosu, Thursday owned up to receiving and signing for the sum of N30m of the N264.8m owned by Diezani at a branch of Fidelity Bank in the build-up to the 2015 general elections. He added that though he received N30m out of the N264.8m, he did not benefit personally from the money but spent it on logistics.

3. The All Progressives Congress, APC, has said that no party member including President Muhammadu Buhari would be given an automatic ticket. This was disclosed in separate media interviews in Abuja, on Thursday, by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, and the Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Owelle Rochas Okorocha.

4. A former Vice President and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Atiku Abubakar has declared his ambition to run for the presidency in 2019. Making his declaration in a speech released to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday night, Atiku described himself as a poor boy from Jada, Adamawa State and a democrat willing to rule the country.

5. The International Press Centre (IPC) on Thursday lamented that media practitioners in Nigeria had become endangered species. It recalled that two Nigerian journalists were killed in 2017 while 12 others suffered various forms of assaults. This was in a statement signed by its director, Lanre Arogundade, to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.

6. President Muhammadu Buhari has approved nominations into the committee for a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers. Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, disclosed this in an interview with State House correspondents after a meeting with Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He said a panel made up of representatives of the Federal and state governments, as well as the private sector has been constituted.

7. A former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services, Dennis Amacree, has stated that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission knows where the ex-Chairman of the defunct Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, is. He said that the only obstacle stopping the commission from getting to him is because Maina had surrounded himself with some tough people.

8. Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Thursday, detained and question former Benue Governor, Gabriel Suswam, over his role in the sharing of of the N23 billion ex-Petroleum Minister, Alison Madueke allegedly doled as bribe to influence the outcome of the last presidential election. Suswam, who is currently facing another set of charges over alleged looting of public funds, arrived the premises of the EFCC around 10 am and was detained in order to reveal all he knows about the money.

9. Report says in less than 24 hours of the declaration of anti-open grazing law by the Benue State Government, suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked some communities in Logo Local Government Area of the state, killing one person, Ortse Kwaghdoo (40), and injuring a 70 year-old man, Hinger Aka.

10. A Labour leader in Kogi State, Mallam Abdulmumuni Yakubu, has been killed in Okene, Kogi State by unknown gunmen. Report says the assassination was carried out by 2 gunmen shortly after the deceased observed his evening prayer in his house on Wednesday. Late Mallam Abdulmumuni before his death was the branch chairman Non-Academic Staff Union of Science Technology Technical Education Board (STTEB).
