1. The Chairman, Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Senator Mathew Urhoghide, on Thursday invited the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, to appear before it to explain how the $600 million Euro bond sourced from the Chinese Government was used. The upper chamber said $600 million loan received to revive the power sector was allegedly diverted by the Federal Government to remodel four airports in the country.
2. The National Economic Council has charged its committee to interface with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation with a view to determining the correct price of premium motor spirit. The governor of Bauchi State, Mohammed Abubakar, disclosed this to State House reporters after the NEC meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday. The governor stated that the committee would consider the fuel prices in neighbouring countries.
3. President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the formation of a new committee to look into the rebuilding of communities affected by violence in some states of the federation caused by both herdsmen and farmers. Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, announced the approval on Thursday at the monthly meeting of the National Economic Council, of which he is chairman.
4. The Zamfara Police Command has confirmed the killing of 18 persons in a fresh attack by gunmen in Birane village in Zurmi Local Government Area of the state. The Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Muhammad Shehu, disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen in Gusau on Thursday. The killing was allegedly perpetrated by some cattle rustlers.
5. Yusuf Usman, executive secretary, National Health Insurance Scheme, has accused corrupt individuals of trying to stop him from fighting graft. Usman said this in reaction to criticisms concerning his reinstatement as executive secretary. The NHIS boss appealed to Nigerians to disregard the misinformation against him in the media, alleging that corruption was only fighting back.
6. The Nigerian Army has promised a Three Million Naira (N3,000,000) cash reward to anyone with credible information that would lead to the arrest of fugitive factional leader of the Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau. The announcement was made in a terse statement issued on Thursday evening by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig-Gen. Sani Usman.
7. The presidency has queried the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, over the detention of Tim Elombah, publisher of Elombah.com. The query is contained in a letter Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, sent to Festus Keyamo, SAN, in respect of his petition over the arrest. In a memo sent to Keyamo and signed by Ade Ipaye, Deputy Chief of Staff, officer of the Vice President, the presidency said it had taken up the matter. It said Idris has already been asked to explained why he arrested and detained members of the Elombah families.
8. Former Pope Benedict is suffering from a disease of the nervous system which puts him on a wheelchair regularly. His brother, George Ratzinger, on Thursday said his condition was critical and added that he feared the paralysis could spread to Benedict’s heart.
9. Nigeria has dropped further one spot in the latest FIFA ranking released by the football governing body on Thursday. The Super Eagles, who were 51st in the world with 651 points in January, are now 52nd with 606 points, according to the ranking on FIFA’s official website on Thursday. The Super Eagles, however, remain seventh in Africa, while Tunisia, Senegal, DR Congo, CHAN champions Morocco, Egypt and Cameroon are Africa’s top six countries.
10. Report says A retired Assistant Superintendent of Police, Daniel Malu, was on Thursday killed by some hoodlums in Jos, Plateau State. The report claimed that Malu was hacked to death by suspected Fulani herdsmen during an operation on the Saki-Ogbooro Road in the Oke-Ogun area of the state.
