Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

1. The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, on Thursday revealed that one Monica Osagie, was the student involved in a sex-for-marks scandal. Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, the Vice Chancellor of OAU, said Monica Osetobe Osagie was studying for a Masters in Business Administration. He also announced the suspension of Prof. Richard Akindele, the don involved in the scandal.

2. No fewer than 20 houses were Thursday razed after armed men attacked Naka, Gwer West LGA of Benue State. Report also has it that attack led to the death of an army officer deployed in the area. The armed men, said to be wearing military camouflage, invaded the community, shooting sporadically and setting houses on fire.

3. The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has ordered all “leviable adults” in the state to pay N3,000 each as “development levy”. This was contained in a statement by the State Commissioner for Community Government, Culture and Traditional Affairs, Louis Duru, on Thursday.

4. Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka has given President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration till the end of July to stop herdsmen killings and return displaced persons to their homes, otherwise the government will be described as a total failure. He made the statement during the inauguration of the 2018 OAU Ife Festival of Foods and Identity at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state.

5. The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced special promotions for 45 officers who participated in the successful arrest of notorious kidnap kingpin, Evans. A statement by Ikechukwu Ani, a spokesperson for the PSC, said the promotions were ratified yesterday at a plenary presided over by Mike Okiro, chairman of the commission. Thirteen of the officers were promoted in acting capacity because they weren’t eligible for substantive promotion.

6. An Abuja High Court has granted Ovie Omo-Agege, senator representing Delta Central, an interim order restraining the police, Department of State Service (DSS) and other law enforcement bodies from arresting him. Ishaq Bello, the presiding judge granted all four prayers presented by the senator’s lawyers. He re-assigned the case to court 30 for hearing of motion on notice and adjourned till May 6.

7. The Presidency has reacted to comments making the rounds that President Muhammadu Buhari described Nigerian youths as lazy, saying the president was quoted out of context. Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said there is a difference between most Nigerian youths and all Nigerians youths. He argued that the president during the speech did not say ‘’ All Nigerian youths.’’

8. The Court of Appeal sitting in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, directed the freezing of Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose’s account. The court In a lead judgment allowed the appeal filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against the judgment of Justice Taiwo. O Taiwo of Federal High Court, Ado Ekiti division.

9. The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has insisted that there is no corruption in the presidency. He noted that the anti-corruption stance of Buhari’s government has saved the country a lot of money.

10. Former Nigeria captain, Nwankwo Kanu has revealed that former Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel is the player that can solve Super Eagles’s creative problem ahead of the 2018 World Cup tournament in Russia. Kanu believes Mikel can be the solution to the team’s lack of creativity if properly given the freedom to play in the role.
