Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Ahead of the 2019 general elections, Mr. Steve Oruruo, the spokesman of the Senator Ayogu Eze campaign organization has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Senator Eze, the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State had unveiled Oruruo as his spokesman a few days ago. But report emerged on Thursday that Oruruo, during the inauguration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s campaign office in Nkanu West on Thursday, announced his defection and is now the Director-General, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi campaign organization in Nkanu West.

2. The House of Representatives said it would investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Michael Adikwu, a key suspect in the Offa, Kwara State robbery attack that claimed scores of lives seven months ago. The Committee on Police Affairs, Human Rights and Justice that was mandated to carry out the investigation is expected to uncover the issues and questions as to when the suspect died, how he died, why the police denied the facts of his death, at what point the Police leadership discovered the death of the suspect and why the police were covering up the facts.

3. The Southwest Zonal office of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said that three members of the party in Osun state, including, Olalekan Awosiyan, Thomas Ojetade and Sina Awodire would be recommended for sanctions in accordance with the party’s constitution for “dragging the Party and its gubernatorial candidate in the last Osun election, Senator Ademola Adeleke to court over issues that bothers on alleged fake certificate.”

4. The Kogi State Deputy Governor, Elder Simon Achuba, has denied online report that he has dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. The Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Sylvester Akor, debunked the rumour Thursday evening. The CPS described the rumour of his principal’s defection to another party as wicked, noting that it was coming from the pit of mischief makers.

5. A Bill for an Act to amend the Public Holidays Act in order to declare June 12 as Democracy Day in Nigeria has passed the second reading at the House of Representatives. The bill, which was jointly sponsored by Rep. Edward Pwajok (APC-Plateau) and Rep. Kayode Oladele, seeks to bring the Act in tandem with the present realities and exigencies of the modern times.

6. Two persons have been confirmed dead from suspected cases of yellow fever in Edo State. It was gathered that the deaths occurred barely a week of the outbreak of strange ailments in some villages in Uhunmwode local government. Symptoms displayed by the victims include high fever, stomach pains, vomiting, nose bleeding, amongst others. Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. David Osifo, who confirmed the outbreak debunked rumours of Lassa fever or Ebola outbreak.

7. The Nigeria Police Force on Thursday, claimed that Michael Adikwu, who was among those arrested for their alleged roles in the April 5 bank robbery in Offa, Kwara state, was not murdered, but slumped and died. In a statement by police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, the police said the suspect’s death does not absolve the Senate President, Bukola Saraki of any wrongdoing.

8. The Presidency, on Thursday, hit back at former president, Goodluck Jonathan, over claims that there is more corruption in President Muhammadu Buhari’s government. This was contained in a statement signed by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity. The Presidency said the allegation lacked empirical evidence to back the claims and that the 16 years of the PDP was a waste, especially on infrastructural development, despite the humongous money available to the government through oil.

9. The Sokoto State House of Assembly on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Alhaji Manir Dan-Iya as the new Deputy Governor of the state. This followed the adoption of a motion by the Deputy Majority Leader, Alhaji Ibrahim Sarki (PDP-Sokoto North II) at plenary.

10. The Nigerian Election Debate Group (NEDG) and Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) have announced dates for the 2019 presidential and vice-presidential election debates. The presidential debate is fixed for December 14, 2018, while vice-presidential candidates will have theirs on January 19, 2019. The announcement was made on Thursday by the Chairman of BON, John Momoh, at a press conference in Abuja.
