Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. A Federal High Court sitting in Gusau, Zamfara State, has sentenced the Chairman of the state Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Murtala Adamu Jengebe to 41 years in imprisonment. Nigerian leading anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) disclosed this on Thursday. EFCC disclosed that a five-man panel of the Court of Appeal sitting in Sokoto and presided over by Justice Hannatu Sankey sentenced Jengebe to a cumulative jail term of 41 years for money laundering.

2. The Nigerian Army has replaced Brigadier General Texas Chukwu as its spokesman. Brigadier General Sani Usman has, however, been reinstated as Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR) Chukwu took over the position in February when Usman enrolled for a senior executive course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Jos.

3. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday told President Muhammadu Buhari that he was ready for presidential debates. Abubakar said this at the inauguration of the party’s presidential campaign council in Abuja, stating that he is dedicated to an issued-based campaign and not “attack on individuals.”

4. The All Progressive Congress (APC) says it has no plan whatsoever to impeach Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom. Mr Ime Okopido, the state APC Chairman stated this while speaking with newsmen in Uyo on Thursday, while reacting to the crisis in the state House of Assembly. Okopido said that the APC and its lawmakers would not waste precious time to institute a process of impeachment on the governor, who has about three months to leave office. He said the current crisis in the State Assembly was caused by the governor Udom Emmanuel.

5. The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has declared that the State Government will continue with the training of recruits into the Neighbourhood Watch.He added that the state will not be deterred by the actions of the Nigerian Army, saying that the disruption of the Rivers State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency Training programme by the Nigerian Army was the worst act of irresponsibility, aimed at instigating insecurity in the State.

6. The All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in Ogun State, Abiodun Akinlade, on Thursday defected to the Allied People’s Movement (APM). Akinlade, who represents Egbado South and Ipokia federal constituency of Ogun, had lost the governorship ticket of the APC to Dapo Abiodun despite all efforts put in place by the state Governor, Ibikunle Amosun to make him secure it. In a statement explaining his decision, Akinlade said he recalled the events before and after the Ogun governorship primary before his decison .

7. A yet-to-be-identified female police officer, alongside her child and mother-in-law were reportedly found dead in Oloosa-Oko compound, Oja-oba area, in Osogbo, the Osun State capital. The woman who was popularly known as Mummy Jumoke, was said to have gone to sleep with her children and the said mother-in-law, leaving her generator on with little or no space for ventilation, resulting to their death.

8. The Nigerian Army on Thursday said its troops killed four Boko Haram terrorists when they attempted to attack 118 Battalion location at Arege village in Borno on Wednesday. It disclosed that the terrorists suffered heavy casualties and fled in disarray, leaving behind four dead bodies of their members.

9. The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has reacted to insinuation by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu that President Muhammadu Buhari was cloned in London. Speaking during a media briefing in his office in Abuja, on Thursday, Mohammed said the idea was “not only absolute idiotic but also sheer bunkum.” The Minister said the insinuation “does not require any response from any responsible government or its agencies.”

10. The Federal Government has told the U.S. to be cautious in granting visa to the PDP Presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, in order not to create the impression of endorsing him for the 2019 election. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, gave the government’s position in Abuja on Thursday. Mohammed said that the government was aware of the move by the former Vice President to lobby the U.S. to lift the visa ban imposed on him, but that the US should be mindful of the timing.
