1. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Thursday inaugurated an advisory committee for the 2019 general elections.
The advisory committee is headed by Air Vice Marshall Ahmed Tijani Muazu, while the 2019 National Collation Center Committee is headed by President Muhammadu Buhari’s niece, Amina Zakari.
2. The Nigerian Air Force has confirmed the death of two pilots and three crew members in the helicopter crash, which occurred in Damasak, Borno State, on Wednesday.
NAF in a statement by Air Commodore, Ibikunle Daramola, disclosed this on Thursday.
3. The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has condemned the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, appointment of President Muhammadu Buhari’s niece, Amina Zakari as its head of Collation Centre for the 2019 elections.
Huriwa in a statement by Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and Zainab Yusuf, the group’s National Coordinator and National Media Affairs Director, respectively, gave the INEC 48 hours to rescind the appointment.
4. Frontline human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has advised the lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial district, Senator Dino Melaye to surrender to the Nigerian Police Force.
The senior lawyer called on the Senator to end the siege by submitting himself for arrest without any further delay.
5. The Police Service Commission (PSC) has received a total of 242,455 applications from interested candidates, with seven days left before they recruit 10,000 police constables.
PSC’s acting spokesman, Aaron Kaase, in a statement released in Abuja on Thursday said Niger State has the highest number of applicants with 15,633, followed by Kano with 15,079 while Katsina is third with 14,582 and othets.
6. Popular Nollywood actor, Gbenga Akintunde, aka Burger has been announced dead.
He was said to have died on Thursday after he went to the hospital to seek treatment for malaria
7. The Chief of Army Staff, Major. Gen. Tukur Buratai has disclosed that the military and other security agencies would ensure peaceful election during the forthcoming election in the country.
Buratai, who gave the assurance on Thursday, while flagging off Operation Egwu Eke III (Python Dance) in Owo, Ondo State, also assured Nigerians of adequate security of lives and property before, during and after the 2019 elections.
8. The Rivers state Police Command now has a new Commissioner of Police, in the person of CP Usman Belel.
CP Belel last served in Zamfara state from where he was transferred to Rivers.
9. President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Labour Unions to allow his administration concentrate on fixing infrastructure in the country rather than distracting it.
Buhari, during a meeting with the Executive Committee of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) at the State House, Abuja, urged the students to continue to plead with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, assuring that he will speak with the lecturers’ body “so that they don’t encroach on your efforts to qualify in time.”
10. Mr Ademola Emmanuel-Longe has assumed office as the new Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State.
His appointment follows the retirement of CP Yahaya Bello on December 24, 2018.
