1. A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday convicted the former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Administrative Secretary in Kwara State, Mr. Christian Nwosu.
Justice Mohammed Idris found him guilty of laundering N264 million.
2. The Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN, has reacted to the withdrawal of its Presidential Candidate, Dr Oby Ezekwesili from the February 16 Presidential Elections.
Addressing the press, the party’s National Chairman and running mate to Dr Ezekwesili, Alhaji Ganiyu Galadima, National Secretary, Chief Paul Isamede, Deputy National Chairman, South, Otunba Bosun Omosule and his counterpart for the North, Alhaji Ibrahim Goronyo said they received with consternation but not surprising Ezekwesili’s withdrawal which was to preempt the decision that the party would have reached after its meeting on Thursday.
3. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has reacted to the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN, Presidential Candidate, Dr Oby Ezekwesili’s withdrawal from the February 16 Presidential Elections.
The Chief press secretary to the INEC chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, said it was impossible for any candidate to withdraw from the race.
4. The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Thursday, barred the Danladi Umar-led Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, from trying the Chief Justice of Nigeria, NJC, Walter Onnoghen.
A three-man panel of the court led by Justice Abdul Aboki, granted the interim order pending the ruling on Onnoghen’s application for stay of proceedings.
5. The Anambra State Government has washed its hand off the Thursday’s endorsement of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Addressing a press conference late Thursday night, the Secretary to the Anambra State Government, Prof Solo Chukwulobelu, who led a delegation of the State to the Imeobi, said they were not part of the exercise.
6. The Court of Appeal in Abuja has declared a former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, as the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
In a unanimous decision by a three-man panel led by Justice Abdul Aboki, the court set aside the December 14, 2018 judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) which had declared Jerry Gana as the candidate of the party.
7. Members of the House of Representatives on Thursday faulted the Council of State for approving N27,000 as the new minimum wage when the agreement reached by the government, organised labour and the private sector was N30,000.
The lawmakers, therefore, expressed their readiness to adopt the N30,000 proposed by the tripartite committee, whose report was presented to President Muhammadu Buhari.
8. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said the Federal Government failed to make fresh offer on funding, for the revitalisation of public universities in the country.
Also, the union stated that government is yet to address the issue of renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, in its new offer made to the union on Monday.
9. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Thursday, urged the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, to investigate the Minister of Information and Culture, Ahaji Lai Mohammed.
The party said the anti-graft agency should go beyond the Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Is’haq Kawu Modibbo and institute a system-wide investigation into the N2.5 billion NBC scandal, including alleged role possible played by Mohammed.
10. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the purported suspension of the party’s governorship candidate in Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, by a faction of the party led by Dan Nwafor.
National Publicity Secretary of the party, Lanre Issa-Onilu, said in a statement on Thursday, noted that the Nwafor-led faction has no legal right to act on behalf of the party, as his leadership has since been dissolved by the National Working Committee (NWC).
