Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has declared President Muhammadu Buhari unfit to continue in office. The opposition political parties said they carefully studied President Buhari over the months, especially since his return to the country after the sickness that took him out of Nigeria for the better part of 2017, and have come to the conclusion that he is no longer mentally and physically fit to lead a nation like Nigeria in this century.

2. The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) on Thursday announced that Nigerians will begin to pay for the National Identity Card from year 2022. The Director General of NIMC, Engr. Aliyu Aziz, disclosed this in Abuja at the Lunch Time Reform Seminar on “The National Digital Identity Ecosystem Strategic Road Map for the Enrollment of Nigerians and Legal Residents into the National Identity Database (NIDB)” organised by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR).

3. Femi Falana, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has slammed fellow lawyers for making a mockery of the legal profession by mobilising support for embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen. Speaking yesterday at an interactive session organised by Citizen Forum in Lagos, Falana maintained that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) gave a wrong impression of the legal profession by directing a boycott of the courts against the purported suspension of Onnoghen.

4. Immediate past Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has criticised President Muhammadu Buhari over his presidential rally in Kano state on Thursday and his endorsement of Gov. Ganduje. Fayose, reacting to the rally in Kano described Buhari as the ‘’grandfather of Corruption Family of Nigeria celebrating the exploits of one of his children. “

5. A frontline lawyer and elder statesman, Professor Ben Nwabueze, SAN, has called for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari, Attorney General of the Federation and Justice Minister, Abubakar Malami, SAN. He also said the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, Justice Danladi Umar should also vacate the position. He said the men have subverted the country’s constitution via the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen. Nwabueze made the call in a lenghty statement he released on Thursday evening.

6. Suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, has stated how he got the foreign currencies found in his domiciliary accounts. In a ‘Cautionary Statement Form’ he filed at the Department of Intelligence Investigation and Monitoring, Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, in Abuja, Onnoghen explained that the deposits in his dollar account were from trading in foreign exchange (forex), AGRICODE, while other investment returns were from proceeds of his investments.

7. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has demanded the immediate redeployment of the Kogi State Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Jacob Spam, following the allegation that the REC collected N10 million from the state government. Head, Media and Publicity of Kogi State PDP Presidential Campaign Council, Mr. Austin Okai who made the demand yesterday in a statement in Lokoja.

8. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced Buruji Kashamu, as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun state. INEC confirmed this in the final list of governorship candidates released on Thursday. Kashamu and Ladi Adebutu had been at loggerheads over the governorship ticket of the party in the state.

9. Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has alleged that there are plans by the Federal Government through the Office of the National Security Adviser as directed by the Independent National Electoral Commission to work with internet service providers to shut down internet access during the forthcoming elections. Governor Wike said that shutting down internet access by the NSA and INEC was aimed at facilitating the rigging of the 2019 General elections.

10. The All Progressives Congress, APC and names of its candidates are missing in the list of political parties and candidates participating in the 2019 Governorship and State House of Assembly elections in Rivers state. Report says APC is missing in the list published at the INEC Secretariat on Aba road. This is in line with the Judgement of Justice James Omotosho who issued a restraining order on INEC to drop the APC from participating in the elections in Rivers state.
