1. The Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has suspended the license of Daar Communications, promoter of AIT, RAY POWER until further notice. The Director-General of NBC, Modibbo Kawu, announced the development Thursday evening. He said the action was taken for failure of the broadcasting station to abide by the broadcasting code. The offences listed by the NBC included the airing of a presidential election documentary by the AIT, a matter pending before a tribunal, the inability of the company to pay its fees, the use of “divisive and inciting contents from Social Media” among others.
2. One of the major contenders for the position of the Senate President in the incoming ninth National Assembly, Senator Ali Ndume, has insisted he will not step down for Senator Ahmad Lawan. Ndume, speaking with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, reiterated his resolve to contest on the floor of the Senate on June 11. He also said he had no reason to visit President Buhari over the contest.
3. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has frowned at the National Broadcasting Commission’s decision, to suspend the license of Daar Communication Plc, promoter of AIT and Ray Power. In a statement on Thursday, PDP claimed it was an attempt by “the All Progressives Congress (APC)-controlled federal government to cage the media”. The opposition party also claimed that Kawu, the NBC boss was a card-carrying member of the APC who contested in the Kwara governorship election.
4. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released the list of match officials, for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. Meanwhile, there are no Nigerian officials included, with about 32 nationalities represented. There are 26 referees and 32 assistant referees in total.
5. A civil rights movement under the aegis Coalition of Public Interest Lawyers and Advocates (COPA) on Thursday claimed that it was in possession of all documents and evidences which established a clear case of fraudulent dishonesty and abuse of trust against a member of the House of Representatives-elect, Femi Gbajabiamila. The organisation also faulted the refusal of Gbajabiamila to address allegation of imprisonment, perjury and stealing levelled against him through a proxy and former chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumuni Jibrin.
6. The Emir of Maru, Alhaji Abubakar Ibrahim and the District Head of Kanoma town, Alhaji Ahmed Lawal have been suspended by the Zamfara State government. They have been asked to step aside for their alleged involvement in armed banditry activities. This was contained in a statement on Thursday by the Director-General, Media and Publicity to the state Governor, Alhaji Yusuf Idris. It said Governor Bello Mutawalle has approved the suspension of the two monarchs, following series of petitions against them by their subjects.
7. The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi ll, is said to have been queried by Governor Umar Ganduje for allegedly misappropriating the Emirate Council’s N3.4 billion. The Emir was queried after the submission of a report by the State office of the anti-corruption and Public Complaint Commission who investigated him on the alleged squandering of the Emirate Council’s funds. The report which was submitted to the Government late Tuesday is said to have recommended for the immediate suspension of the Emir.
8. A former Defence Minister, Lt. Gen. T.Y Danjuma (retd); former Military Governor of Rivers State, General Zamani Lekwot (retd); and Chief Solomon Asemota, SAN, have dragged President Muhammadu Buhari to the United Kingdom, UK, Parliament, alleging that the President was pursuing a jihad or Islamisation agenda. They told the UK parliament that Buhari was not serious about tackling insecurity arising from Boko Haram insurgency and herdsmen-farmers crises in the country. The trio acted under the aegis of Nigerian Christian Elders Forum, NCEF.
9. Senator Danjuma Goje has withdrawn from the 9th Senate Presidency election expected to hold on June 11. The lawmaker also endorsed the Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, for the position. This was disclosed by the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, after their meeting behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday.
10. The Imo State Police Command has confirmed that a bomb explosion killed three persons in the State. Orlando Ikeokwu, the Police Public Relation Officer, (PPRO) in the State, disclosed to reporters that the explosion occurred in Eziorsu community in Oguta Local Government Area. He gave the names of the victims, as Elvis Ukado; Kasiemobi Uzoma and Justice Adie. Orlando further stated that the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Ladodo, and his team had visited the bomb explosion scene.
