1. The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared December 25 and 26 as public holidays. It also declared January 1 as work free day to enable Nigerians join the rest of the work to mark this year’s Christmas, Boxing and New Year celebrations.
2. Family of immediate Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke has confirmed that their ailing daughter is alive and kicking. The family was responding to the social media romour that Alison-Madueke died in a London hospital on Thursday.
3. Students in public schools in Lagos will enjoy free meals from 2016, courtesy of the Federal and state governments, the state governor, Akinwumi Ambode has said. According to him, the programme would be done in collaboration with the Federal Government, which would provide 60 per cent of the funding.
4. The West African Examination Council, WAEC, has released the results of the November/December 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE.
Head of WAEC National Office, Mr. Isaac Adenipekun, who made the disclosure, Thursday said, of the 237,154 candidates that sat the examination, 79,490 candidates, representing 33.51% obtained 6 credits and above.
5. Founder of DAAR Communications Plc, Chief Raymond Dokpesi has called for immediate national prison reform.
The media guru made this call following his release from Kuje prison where he was remanded until he met the bail conditions set for him by Justice Gabriel Kolawole of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
6. January 9, 2016 has been set aside for the conclusion of the governorship election in Bayelsa State.
Spokesperson for INEC, Nick Dazang, who confirmed the new date for election in Southern Ijaw local government said the commission had already issued a public notice on the exercise.
7. No fewer than five persons were, yesterday, shot dead at the Niger Bridge Head, while seven others were badly injured after members of the Indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, and Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, clashed with Joint Task Force, JTF.
Four of the victims shot dead were members of both IPOB and MASSOB, while one person is said to be a soldier, who was grabbed by the mob.
8. A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, has ordered the Department of State Service, DSS, to immediately release the detained leader of IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.
The court directed that Kanu, who had been in detention since October 17, should be released “unconditionally.” Ruling on the fundamental rights suit by Kanu, the trial judge, Justice Ademola Adeniyi, said there was no basis for the applicant to remain in custody since there was currently no charge pending against him.
9. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, said on Thursday that the arrested Shi’ite sect leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zak-Zaky, is no longer in the custody of the Army.
The army boss told who was responding to the request by NSCIA to meet with the sect leader, said that El-Zak-Zaky had been handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.
10. English FA Champions, Chelsea have sacked Jose Mourinho as the club’s manager for the second time.
Meanwhile, the club is set to turn to Guus Hiddink to take over until the end of the season.
