Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian newspapers :

1. The House of Representative seems to have become the focus , following the allegation that the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara attempted to pad N30m into the controversial 2016 budget. This allegation was raised by the sacked chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, in a statement he issued, explaining how he disagreed with the Speaker and other principal officers in the House on sundry issues.

2. 11 persons were on Thursday burnt to death following an accident involving 14 passenger volkswagen commercial bus. Report says the bus somersaulted and caught fire in the process. LASEMA spokesman, in a statement confirmed that 11 persons were burnt to death. He said 3 persons were rescued alive and taken to accident and emergency unit at toll gate.

3. The Court of Appeal sitting in Makurdi, will today deliver its judgement on a petition brought before it by Daniel Onjeh of the All Progressives Congress on the outcome of the Benue South senatorial rerun. Onjeh is asking the court to declare him winner on the ground that he won his opponent, Mark.

4. Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Thursday, reshuffled some chairmanship positions in Senate committees. Incidentally, those who got the most juicy positions were his rivals. Kabiru Marafa, who appears to be his most vicious critic has been appointed chairman of the Petroleum (downstream) Committee. While Oluremi Tinubu, a key member of the anti-Saraki Unity Forum, has been asked to chair the Committee on Environment.

5. Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, Thursday, said all structures in the expansive Gbagyi Villa, suburb of Kaduna metropolis without Certificate-of-Occupancy and Building Permits would be pulled down. He said this in disregard to a pending court case instituted by the community.

6. A human Rights lawyer, Femi Aborisade, Thursday, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to probe Sahara energy if he is serious about the anti corruption crusade. He also urged the President to probe into the activities of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC ) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

7. Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, yesterday, while painting a gloomy picture of the economy when she appeared before the Senate said the country was already in recession. She also said President Muhammadu Buhari’s government inherited negative reserves and salary and wage bill of N165 billion.

8. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema, has affirmed that there had been no enough evidence to prove that the three members of the House of Representatives accused of sexual misconduct actually carried out the act. Onyema was addressing the House of Representatives Ethics and Privilege Committee and House Committee on Foreign Relations public investigative hearing in Abuja. He also disclosed that the outgone United States Ambassador, James Entwistle, had tendered an apology for breaching diplomatic protocol by writing directly to the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, over the allegation instead of passing through the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

9. Following the jubilation that greeted the Appeal Court judgment on Thursday on the right to wear Hijab, Islamic headscarf, in public primary and secondary schools as granted by the court, the Commissioner for Information, Mr Steve Ayorinde, said it is not yet uhuru as the appellate court delivered its judgement based on its wisdom and that the government will have to study it critically to determine its next line of action.

10. Head coach of Nigeria’s U-23 team, Samson Siasia, has named his 18-man squad for this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They are: Goalkeepers: Daniel Akpeyi, Emmanuel Daniel Defenders: Sincere Seth, Kingsley Madu, Saturday Erimuya, William Troost-Ekong, Ndifreke Effiong, Stanley Amuzie. Midfielders: Mikel Obi, Oghenekaro Etebo, Popoola Sodiq, Azubuike Okechukwu, Usman Mohammed, Shehu Abdullahi. Strikers: Umar Aminu, Imoh Ezekiel, Junior Ajayi, Sadiq Umar.Alternate players: Taiwo Awoniyi, Yusuf Mohammed (Kano Pillars), Stanley Dimgba (Sunshine Stars) and Godwin Saviour.
