Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

1. Indonesia government has executed three Nigerians convicted for drug trafficking.

The three Nigerians and an Indonesian were shot by firing squad during a thunderstorm shortly after midnight on Nusakambangan Island in Central Java, despite international calls for leniency.

2. The Federal senior civil servants have threatened to embark on indefinite strike over unpaid salary arrears. The workers, who said they were no longer patient with the FG, added that the current state of affairs in the country, where sufferings had been lifted to a frightening level, was the time to settle the arrears to calm all frayed nerves and restore normalcy in the system.

3. Several persons were injured on Thursday after Boko Haram members attacked a team of United Nations, UN, on their way to Bama, Borno State.

It was gathered that officials, working for the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, were ambushed at an area close to Bama, under Konduga local government area of Borno State.

4. The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sacked the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The court, in a verdict by Justice Okon Abang, held that every action the committee had taken since it emerged through a convention the party purportedly held in Port Harcourt on May 21, amounted to nullity.

5. A former Chairman, House of Reps Committee on Appropriation, Mr. Abdulmumin Jibrin, has threatened to continue making fresh allegations against the four principal officers of the national assembly until they were prosecuted. In his latest question, which he numbered 21, Jibrin accused the Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, of allegedly “diverting” a Federal Government water project to his farm in Nasarawa State.

6. Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose has vowed to speak against the leadership style of President Muhammadu Buhari-led government. Fayose boasted that once he stops speaking, many Nigerians will suffer under the current government.

7. Former Senate President, David Mark has stated that his silence in the national assembly does not mean he was not representing the people of Benue South Senatorial District. Mark, who was reacting to an article by coordinator of Idoma People of Nigeria, Josephine Akioyamen, who slammed him for maintaining a closed lips in the house, insisted that he was fighting for his constituency, despite his loud silence.

8. An officer of the Nigerian Navy, Lt.-Cdr Olumide Adewale, has told the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission that he helped his former boss, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, to transport money, which was flown to Akure and later handed over to Abiodun Agbele on the instructions of Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State.

Adewale, who was the Aide-de-Camp to Obanikoro when the latter was the Minister of State for Defence, said this on Wednesday when he was grilled by detectives of the EFCC. EFCC said the money was part of the N4.7bn that was paid into Obanikoro’s sons’ company account, Sylvan McNamara, on the instructions of the embattled former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.).

9. Some leaders of the Ijaw community in Lagos State have stated that they have taken steps to stop the Niger Delta militants from carrying out further attacks on oil installations in the region. A former president of the Izon Community, Lagos State, Regent Youmor, in a statement, said the Ijaw leaders were set to douse the tension.

10. A member of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad has killed a 42-year-old patent medicine dealer in Kano. The police officer shot dead Tochukwu Iro following an allegation that he refused to stop when ordered to do so by his team.
