Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian newspapers :

1. The Federal Government of Nigeria has withdrawn the charge of criminal conspiracy hanging around the necks of Senate President Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.

An affidavit in support of the motion was filed before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday by a litigation officer from the Federal Ministry of Justice, Odubu Loveme.

2. In Makurdi, Benue State capital, two ladies were burnt to death by angry mob over alleged involvement in acts of lesbianism on Thursday. Report says the ladies were roasted around Owner’s Occupier area in Makurdi. The police said they were not yet aware of the incident.

3. Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, declared on Thursday that former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan saved many Nigerians from anarchy for conceding defeat in the 2015 presidential election.

Governor Dickson said the decision made by Jonathan changed the political history of Nigeria and that the latter should be thanked forever for that singular act.

4. Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has claimed that the failure of the immediate past government to provide necessary equipment and supplies to the military was the reason for the spread of Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East.

Osinbajo, who was the special guest at the graduation, said that the failure resulted to the death of over 20, 000 people, with over two million displaced and more than 75, 000 children orphaned.

5. The Nigerian Senate and the House of Representatives have agreed to invite President Muhammadu Buhari for a joint session to address them on ways out of the nation’s economic quagmire.

The motion which stood in the name of Senate Leader, Ali Ndume reads: “That the Senate do concur with the House of Representatives Resolution passed on Thursday 22nd September, 2016.”

6. The troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE on Thursday, intercepted and neutralized a male suicide bomber at the outskirts of Maiduguri, Borno State.

The acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman Kukasheka said the terrorist, who attempted to infiltrate through the troops forward defences at Jidari Polo general area, came in through Alidawari village about 4 kilometres ahead of Jidari strapped with heavy Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) vest.

7. The Chairman of Leadership Newspapers Group and former presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, Sam Nda-Isaiah has revealed that no fewer than 10,000 Nigerians would have lost their lives if former President, Goodluck Jonathan had refused to concede defeat in the 2015 presidential election.

Nda-Isaiah, All Progressives Congress (APC) Chieftain said Senator Ben Bruce, Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, the then Director General of the Department of State Security, Ita Ekpenyong, former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka and several others encouraged the then president to make that iconic phone call.

8. A civil rights organisation, the Nigerian Youths Collective Against Violence and Terrorism, in Abuja on Thursday stormed the streets protesting against the role played by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria led by Ibrahim El-Zakzaky during the attack on the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai by members of his sect.

The protest came barely 24 hours after a group of protesters under the aegis of the Sovereign Rights Coalition, called on the Federal Government to sever diplomatic relationship with Iran over the same allegation of sponsoring El-Zakzaky.

9. There are indications that the Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, might soon pitch his tent with the All Progressives Congress following the current crisis rocking his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

The suspension of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Mr. Victor Oye, on Thursday by the National Working Committee of the party, has cracked the party.

10. The Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Tunji Bello, has faulted the information contained in President Muhammadu Buhari’s authorised biography. He described as sad and mischievous the claim by Paden that a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, was strongly opposed to the choice of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as Buhari’s running mate in the 2015 presidential election.
