Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here’s today’s summary of Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The National Judicial Council, NJC, yesterday, announced the suspension of all the judges being investigated over allegations of corruption. It said they should step down from the Bench pending their trial. The NJC took this position at the end of a two-day emergency meeting in Abuja yesterday.

2. After much controversy, the Independent National Electoral Commission on Thursday in Abuja announced December 10 as the date for rerun elections in Rivers State. The announcement was made by the Secretary to the Commission, Mrs. Augusta Ogakwu. The Senate had earlier warned that it would abandon plenary if the commission failed to organise the election and other rerun elections in the country before December 10.

3. The Federal Government, through the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has filed criminal charges against the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Mr. Saleh Gambo, the Assistant Director of Finance, Rilwanu Lawal, and the Deputy Director of Finance, Sharif Abdulrahman. It has been alleged that they diverted N2.2 billion belonging to the Supreme Court of Nigeria, into personal bank accounts.

4. The Senate on Thursday dismissed the 2017-2019 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Sustainability Paper sent to it by President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that the documents were empty, hence cannot be considered by the Senate.

5. A report has claimed that former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has put in an undertaking, promising to refund N480m to the Federal Government. The report further revealed that he also submitted his United States of America and Nigerian passports to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. He has equally provided two sureties who are directors in the Federal Civil Service in order to regain his freedom.

6. The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, has stated that some people are using the social media media to pull him down. He also denied the allegations that he was blackmailing President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointees or traditional rulers. This was contained in a statement by the EFCC issued by its spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren.

7. President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday admitted that he contemplated running away after he was inaugurated as the President in May 2015 due to the many problems he inherited from past administrations. Buhari disclosed this while addressing 68 Nigerians who participated in the Senior Executive Course 38 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, and the institute’s management staff at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

8. The Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps Sector in Ogun, Mr. Clement Oladele, announced on Thursday that a section of the Ibadan/Lagos corridor by Sagamu Interchange will be temporarily closed against vehicles by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc for repairs. The repairs will commence as from Nov.3 to Nov. 12.

9. The Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, on Thursday apologised to the people of the state, the workers and Nigerians for the industrial dispute that rocked the state for about two weeks. He went ahead to describe the state’s civil service in the state as the best in the country, saying he was always proud of the public workers.

10. At least, three persons were Thursday injured after violence broke out during an election into the Ekiti State Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers in Ado-Ekiti. Two others were arrested by men of the Department of State Security for causing trouble. Violence broke out following a group of teachers protest against alleged manipulation of the delegates’ list for the election.
