Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers 1. The House of Representatives has explained why it is buying exotic cars worth N3.6bn for its 360 members at a period the country is going through economic recession.
It said lawmakers must have a means of mobility while carrying out oversight duties over Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government.
2. The Peoples Democratic Party, Abia State chapter has lost its treasurer, Chief Steve Omeoga to the icy hands of death.
Omeoga reportedly slumped at a popular sport club, in Umuahia, the state capital, shortly after playing a lawn tennis game with a club member on Wednesday evening.
3. The Federal Government has stated that it is owing former Presidents and ex-Heads of State including Goodluck Jonathan, Olusegun Obasanjo and Shehu Shagari allowances since January this year.
Explaining the reason why the former heads of government were owed, the SGF, Babachir Lawal, said it was due to unavailability of funds for the service-wide votes for salaries of ex-presidents.
4. The Federal Government would on November 21 arraign a Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, before the Federal High Court in Abuja over charges bordering on money laundering and others relating to violation of provisions of Immigration Act relating to obtaining of passports. Justice John Tsoho is expected to handle the case.
5. Chairman of the University of Calabar Academica Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Tony Eyang, has vowed that the union will not surrender, until the government meets its demands.
Eyang noted that though it is painful that ASUU is taking such a stand, it was for the good of education in Nigeria, adding that the union has been making efforts to meet with Muhammadu Buhari, since he came on board, but all to no avail.
6. Rear Admiral Apochi Ogabu Suleiman has been appointed as the new commander for Operation Delta Safe in the Niger Delta.
Suleiman, who replaced Rear Admiral Joseph Osa Okojie, until his appointment, was the Director Development at the Defence Headquarters.
7. The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has kicked against the recent amendment to the pension rights of former governors and deputy governors by the state House of Assembly, which provided them with houses worth N300m.
The party said, the decision of the house to amend the 2007 Pension Rights of the Governor and Deputy Governor Law to include the provision of a building valued at not more than N200m for a former governor and another worth N100m for his deputy was wasteful.
8. There is a looming communal clash in Delta community as the youths of Ighele-Urhobo have given Ijaw indigenes resident in Udu Land fourteen days to vacate their land including Aladja Community. The ultimatum is based on the recent attacks by the Ogbe-Ijoh and Isaba Communities where several persons were killed with others held hostage.
9. A Bill for an Act to provide for the establishment of National Poverty Eradication Commission ( NAPEC) has been passed by the Nigerian Senate.
The Bill which was read for the second time on the 21st April 2016 and committed to the joint committee; seeks to enact a law that will strengthen the execution of the Poverty Eradication Programmes in Nigeria.
10. The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has again asked Nigerians to dismiss reports that it has approved the operation of Russian ponzi scheme, MMM.
Reacting, Isaac Okorafor, Acting Director, CBN Corporate Communications, warned that apex bank did not approve the ponzi scheme, stressing that anyone doing it is on his or her own.
