Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

1. President Muhammadu Buhari has pointedly told those clamoring for the independent state of Biafra to bury the idea.

President Buhari, who stated this during a meeting with the South-East Council of Traditional Rulers at the Presidential Villa, said the question of carving another country out of Nigeria was misplaced.

2. Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka has stated that he has torn his US Green Card as he promised following the emergence of Donald Trump as the President of United States.

3. The Federal Government has fired five senior lecturers and seven other workers at the Auchi Polytechnic for offences bordering on sexual harassment and extortion of female students in the school.

Fifteen other lecturers and one instructor were also demoted in relation to the same offences according to a statement by the Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education, Dr. Masa’udu Adamu-Kazaure.

4. The naira has‎ further weakened against the United States dollar, amid a crackdown in the parallel market.

The local currency fell 2.08 per cent week-on-week on Thursday to 480 to the dollar on the parallel market against 470 a dollar last week, while it was quoted by commercial lenders at 314.80 a dollar on the interbank market.

5. Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo has stated that the figure of the 2017 Appropriation Bill, yet to be presented to the National Assembly, is about N7trillion.

Osinbajo‎ acknowledged that the size of the budget was not big enough to make a significant difference on the nation’s economy.

6. The All Progressives Congress, APC, on Thursday appointed a former Minister of Youth and Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, as its National Publicity Secretary.

However, some members of the party are against the emergence of Abdullahi, a native of Kwara who was unveiled at a mini convention at Chelsea Hotel in Abuja.

7. The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has insisted he is still the authentic spokesperson of the party, until a court of law says otherwise.

Frank in a statement, affirmed that he had nothing against Abdullahi as a person, but that “the process to become an authentic spokesman should be followed”.

8. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, has welcomed the congratulatory messages extended to it by the outgoing Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko over the emergence of its candidate, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) in the recently held election.

The party also urged the incumbent Governor, to ensure smooth transition of power.

9. A group of five heavily armed men clad in military fatigues stormed the Abuja office of a private firm belonging to a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudom Nwuche, and carted away over N10m cash and other valuables running into millions of naira.

The robbery took place at the office located at Colorado Street, Maitama Abuja, on Tuesday.

10. The Kaduna State’s 2017 Appropriation Bill of N214bn was on Thursday passed into law by the state House of Assembly three weeks earlier than it did last year.

The lawmakers approved N214.921bn as 2017 budget for the state as against N172bn it approved for 2016.

The state Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, presented the draft appropriation bill, which he christened, “Budget of jobs, social justice and equity” to the lawmakers on October 12, 2016 for approval.
