1. The Nigerian Senate on Thursday rejected the nomination of Alhaji Ibrahim Magu as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Briefing the Senate Press Corp after an executive session of the Senate, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Senator Abdullahi Sabi said the nomination of Mr. Magu was rejected based on security reports available to the Senate.
2. Thousands of Rivers people led by Governor Nyesom Wike took to the streets on Thursday to protest the alleged mass killings by the Police and other security agencies during the December 10 rerun elections. The peaceful protest terminated at the Rivers State Police Command headquarters on Moscow Road where Wike addressed the police, calling for the transfer of two officers from the state over their alleged roles in the just concluded rerun. The officers are the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Steven Hasso and the Commander of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Mr Akin Fakorede.
3. Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose on Thursday stormed the Ado-Ekiti branch of the Zenith Bank to make withdrawal from his frozen account. This follows the order by the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday that his accounts should be immediately unfrozen. He however made a withdrawal of of N5 million after waiting for two hours.
4. The Lagos headquarters of U.S. oil major, ExxonMobil was on Thursday shut down, following a protest by the blue-collar oil unions over the sacking of over 100 workers. Members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, led the protest to the office of the oil giant, protesting the sacking of Nigerian workers. They have threatened to shut down oil supply across the country if the issue is not addressed on time.
5 .A telephone conversation allegedly made between the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike and some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has been leaked. The audio revealed how Wike tried to rig the just concluded legislative rerun in the state. He was allegedly heard threatening to collect his money back from an INEC official, who was backing out of the plan and even threatened to kill him.
6. The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres on Thursday announced Nigeria’s Environment Minister, Amina Mohammed, as his Deputy Secretary-General. Guterres made the announcement through the spokesman of the Secretary-General, Mr. Stephane Dujarric. Guterres also announced the duo of Ms. Maria Viotti of Brazil and Ms. Kyung-Wha Kang of the Republic of Korea into high-profile positions at the UN.
7. A total of N386.879 billion has been disbursed as federal allocation, for November 2016 for the Federal, state and local governments. The figure was released after the meeting of the monthly Federation Account Allocation Committee, FAAC, in Abuja on Thursday. Report says the gross statutory revenue of N240.120 billion received for the month was higher than the N238.716 billion received in the previous month by N1.404 billion.
8. A document showing the DSS report that made the Senate to reject Magu as EFCC Chairman has been exposed in the media. The Department of State Services disclosed in the report that the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, has failed integrity test, warning that he will hinder President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war. The report listed several alleged malpractices against the EFCC boss.
9. Members of the House of Representatives on Thursday condemned the treatment meted out to the Super Falcons by the Sports authorities and its Minister, Mr. Solomon Dalung, for failing to pay their bonuses and allowances after winning the Women’s Championship in Cameroon, stating that it would have been better the country was not represented in the competition than the disgrace it had received over the embarrassing development.
10. The Federal Government, yesterday, insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration was not responsible for the current economic woes of the country. It said that it was on a rescue mission to right the wrongs of the past governments. This was reiterated after the meeting of the National Economic Council, NEC chaired by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo at the presidential Villa, Abuja.
