1. The Nigerian Army yesterday confirmed the rescue of another Chibok girl. According to Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, the Director Army Public Relations, troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE during investigation of arrested suspected Boko Haram terrorists discovered one of the abducted Chibok Schoolgirls, Rakiya Abubakar, with her six months old baby. The army said from preliminary investigation, it was discovered she is the daughter of Abubakar Gali Mulima and Habiba Abubakar of Chibok.
2. Magistrates in Osun state have threatened to embark on strike over the refusal of the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Adeoye Fimihan, to comply with the court order directing him to arrest and bring Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, before the court. The Association of Magistrates, in a letter dated January 4th, 2017 and addressed to the Chief Judge of Osun State, Justice Adepele Ojo, demanded an order from the judiciary compelling the CP to arrest Oluwo, saying they may stop sitting if the order is not complied with.
3. The Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday prescribed death sentence for kidnappers as it passed a bill aimed at checking the spate of kidnapping in the state into law. The lawmakers passed the Bill for a Law to Provide for the Prohibition of the Act of Kidnapping and for Other Connected Purposes after the third reading.
4. The Federal University of Technology, Minna, has expelled 700 students. They were expelled for offences ranging from bad behaviour to poor academic performance in the 2015/2016 academic session. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Musbau Akanji, who made the disclosure on Thursday during the 30th matriculation ceremony of the University, said 5,141 new students were accepted for the 2016/2017 academic session.
5. After a long silence over the killings in Southern Kaduna, President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered immediate action aimed at ending the recurring acts of violence and destruction in the Southern part of Kaduna State. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said this in a statement on Thursday night. He said that based on the directive, the Inspector-General of Police was in the area on Saturday and Sunday to assess the situation.
6. Leader of the defunct Niger Delta Volunteer Force, Alhaji Asari Dokubo has claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari greatly benefited from the activities of the Boko Haram sect which consequently pushed him to power. He also said in an interview that there are no Chibok girls as widely believed.
7. No fewer than 20 members of Boko Haram insurgents have surrendered in Nigeria’s neighbouring country, Niger. The country’s interior minister, Bazoum Mohamed said this in an interview. He said that in some sectors, the war against Boko Haram is already won and over.
8. There was tension at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos State on Tuesday as fight broke out between an Arik manager and some angry passengers. A video which has already gone viral online saw some passengers demanding for explanation on why their flight to South Africa was delayed for 3 days without notice. They consequently attacked the manager who could not provide any reasonable explanation.
9 .The Airline Operators of Nigeria, an umbrella body for carriers in the country have continued to oppose the move by the government to shut the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, saying the repairs can take place at night instead of shutting down airlines operations for several days.
10. The Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State on Thursday said the alleged moves to remove Governor Ayodele Fayose would lead to the total collapse of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. Hailing the governor for writing the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen and informing him of the alleged moves to compromise a section of the judiciary as a result of the plot, the party said Fayose was more of the voice of the opposition and not just a governor.
