1. President Muhammadu Buhari has informed the Senate of his intention to proceed on a leave between January 23 and February 6, 2017.
A letter read by the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, said the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, will be in Acting capacity while while Buhari’s leave lasts.
2. The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun has explained that the inability of the Federal Government to generate enough revenue to meet its obligations had left it with no other choice than to turn to international financial institutions for loans to finance critical infrastructure projects.
According to her, with a huge monthly personnel expenditure of about N210bn, coupled with additional debt service burden of N120bn, making a total of N330bn every month, it had become difficult with the low receipts from oil to generate enough revenue to meet these obligations as well as fund capital projects.
3. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC, has declared what seems to be a total war against ponzi schemes in the country.
The development signals onslaught against promoters of ponzi schemes like Mavrodi Mondial Movement, MMM, Get Help Worldwide, among others.
Ibrahim Magu, Acting Chairman, EFCC, and his SEC counterpart, Mournir Gwarzo made the pledge while signing a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, for cooperation at the EFCC head office, Abuja.
4. The Nigerian Air Force, on Thursday, set up a six-man panel to investigate the Tuesday accidental air strike by the Nigerian Air Force at the Rann’s Internally Displaced Persons camp in the Kala-Balge Local Government Area of Borno State.
As part of its investigation into the bombing, the panel had summoned, among others, the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Lucky Irabor, the pilots who launched the air strike, and some air officers at the Air Component base in Yola, Adamawa State.
5. History was made yesterday as Adama Barrow was sworn-in as new President of Gambia.
He took the oath of office at the Gambian Embassy in Dakar, Senegal on Thursday.
Speaking after taking oath of office, Barrow called on security forces to “demonstrate their loyalty” in a standoff with outgoing President of the country, Yahya Jammeh.
6. A senator representing Akwa Ibom South, Nelson Effiong, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The lawmaker announced his decision to join the ruling party on the floor of the red chambers at plenary on Thursday.
7. Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has called on Agatu people of the state not to chase Fulani herdsmen away from their land. The governor, who spoke during his visit to the crisis-ridden community during the week, urged them to forgive the herdsmen and co-habit with them peacefully as brothers.
8. There was pandemonium in Fagbile Phase 3 Estate, White Sand, in the Ijegun area of Lagos State after some gunmen killed two residents and abducted a teenager, simply identified as Uloma Igwe.
Those killed were identified as the Chairman of the Harmony Community Development Association, Malam Ibrahim Omatar, and a Togolese, identified simply as Job.
9. Baring any last minute change, victims of Nigerian-Turkish International Colleges kidnap incident would regain their freedom this weekend, police said.
Already, security agents had garnered enough insights into the movements of the suspects in the creeks, following the arrest of the masterminds of the kidnap.
10. The Nigeria police have arrested publisher of online portal, Premium Times, Dapo Olorunyomi.
The newspaper said Olorunyomi was arrested alongside its judiciary correspondent, Evelyn Okakwu.
According to the news medium, plain-clothed officers conducted search at the office shortly after 5p.m. Thursday, and said they were acting on a complaint filed by the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai.
