Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

1. Justice Latee Okunnu of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, on Thursday sentenced the Managing Director of Ontario Oil and Gas Limited, Mrs. Ada Ugo-Ngali, to 10 years in prison over N754m fuel subsidy fraud . The judge equally ordered the return of the sum to the Federal Government.

2. The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, has called on the President to speak to Nigerians in order to put to rest his death rumour. The Congress said it would be proper for the President to make a public appearance to clear the uncertainty of his condition and whereabouts. The General Secretary of the NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson gave the advice on Thursday.

3. Report says some unknown gunmen on Thursday morning shot Ini Ekpo, the counsel to the founder of Reigners’ Bible Church, Apostle Akan Weeks, at his residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. It was reported that the gunmen gained entrance into his house through the main gate around 2:27am, broke into his room and shot him twice on his two legs and left with his four laptops.

4. The Senate, Thursday, directed its Committees on Public Procurement and Works to, to urgently investigate alleged inflation of two contract sums which show excess of N2.4 billion by the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, as well the Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP. The committee was asked to forward the report of the probe within one week.

5. Nigerian music legend, 2face Idibia has disclosed that he will be embarking on a nationwide protest against the alleged obnoxious policies of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. 2baba who disclosed this on his instagram page has the support of some of his colleagues in the industry including Davido and Burna Boy.

6. The Senate President, Bukola Saraki has1 named the immediate past Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, as Chairman, Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. The announcement was made after lawmakers concluded their day three debate on the 2017 budget.

7. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Thursday, told the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja that Justice Mohammed Yunusa had admitted to receiving N1.5m from embattled Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Rickey Tarfa. An investigator with the EFCC, Mr. Danladi Daniel said that he admitted to the crime when he appeared at the Commission’s office last year.

8. Some former ministers have been asked by the nation’s lawmakers to return unaccounted funds from the $470million Lagos and Abuja Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) contract. The House of Representatives adhoc committee’s report indicted the ministers who served between 2010 and 2014 in the Ministry of Police Affairs, which handled the project during the Goodluck Jonathan administration. They are Alhaji Adamu Waziri, Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade (retd) and Alhaji Jelili Adesiyan as well as a former Permanent Secretary of the defunct ministry, Mr. James Obeigbu.

9. Following the crisis rocking the power sector in Nigeria, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu has called for the split of the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing currently under the leadership of Babatunde Fashola. The APC Chieftain made the remark while delivering a lecture at the National Defence College, Course 25.

10. The presidency has further clarified the health status of President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that he is not ill and also not on admission in any hospital in London. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina said the President was in London only on vacation, tagging the rumour of his hospital admission as figment of people’s imagination.
