1. Immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that if Nigeria fails to address religious violence and extremism, the menace will destroy the country.
According to Jonathan, the solution to the Niger Delta crisis was already included in the report of the 2014 National Conference, held in Abuja.
2. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has slammed Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige over his outlaw of warning strike and threat to invoke ‘no work no pay’.
The workforce said it was shocked by the minister’s comment that the ministry would invoke no work no pay decision.
3. Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed has explained why only 21 girls have been freed from the Boko Haram sect.
Mohammed noted that the administration believes that it is not fair on the part of the Bring Back Our Girls Group not to take a holistic picture of the situation.
4. The Naira has continued to extend its stability against the dollar at all the major segments of the forex market.
At the parallel market, the Naira yesterday exchanged at N498 to a dollar, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro traded at NN615 and N525, respectively.
5. Many filling stations in parts of Lagos and Ogun states did not sell Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol, to motorists on Thursday as they had run out of the product.
Motorists queued for petrol at the few filling stations that dispensed the product on Thursday, while some independent oil marketers refused to sell petrol to consumers.
6. Commissioner of Police in charge of Lagos State, Fatai Owoseni, has vowed that the Command will not allow the planned February 6 protest to be led by music superstar, Innocent Idibia, also known as 2Baba and Tuface to hold in the metropolis.
Owoseni said the Command has received an intelligence report that criminals would hijack the process to cause mayhem.
7. Some former militants, under the umbrella of Urhobo Ex-Militant Leaders Forum, have declared their support for hip-hop singer, 2face Idibia, who is planning a nationwide protest on February 6, 2017 in Lagos.
In a statement released by the National chairman Phase 2 ex-militants Mr H. M. Ebirie, the Niger Delta ex-agitators said they were fully in support of the 2face Idibia-led nationwide mass protest against economic hardship and severe hunger in the country.
8. Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Dino Melaye, has raised the alarm over the contract sum for the construction of the official residences of the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, describing the sums as inflated.
According to Melaye, the gatehouse alone of Osinbajo’s three-bedroom apartment will cost N250m.
9. A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abia State, Prince Benjamin Apugo, has declared that the people of the South East will push for an Igbo Presidency after the second tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Apugo, a member of the APC Board of Trustees, BoT, gave the call in reaction to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s remark that the Igbo should via for the Presidency in 2019.
10. Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, has said he is unaware of a cure for HIV/AIDS, which has been reportedly discovered by a Professor of Virology at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia State, Maduike Ezeibe.
The Director Media & Public Relations at the Ministry of Health, Mrs. Boade Akinola, Adewole said the ministry was not aware of the development.
