Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

1. The Super Eagles of Nigeria have improved nine places in the latest FIFA ranking. It moved from 50th to 41st position in the world in the ranking released on Thursday. Nigeria now occupies the seventh place in Africa.

2. Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has officially taken over Arik Air. A statement by AMCON said the development would bring respite to the airline. It noted that Arik Air would now be managed by Capt. Roy Ukpebo Ilegbodu, a veteran aviation expert under the receivership of Mr. Oluseye Opasanya, SAN.

3. Some photographs in circulation indicates that the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu and the founding Interim Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande on Thursday visited President Muhammadu Buhari in the United Kingdom, UK. The President reportedly received the party leaders, at the Abuja House, in London. Those images were now indication that Buhari is alive but ill.

4. The Labour unions on Thursday marched to the presidential villa abuja in protest of the current state of things in the country. The protester who were received by the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo requested for upward review of workers salaries among other things.

5. Gunmen Thursday morning abducted Secretary of Isheri North Estate, GRA, Lagos State, Dayo Adekoya. He was abducted at about 1am by gunmen who stormed the estate, shot into the air and whisked him away. Report says three estate security men were equally killed in the operation.

6. Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Thursday raided the home of former General Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Andrew Yakubu, in Kaduna city. The EFCC agents allegedly recovered $9.2million from Yakubu’s safe and an additional £72,000.

7. The Chairman, Senate Committee on Communications, Gilbert Nnaji, has alerted the federal government of the grave negative consequences for the nation as Network Operating Centres of telecommunication firms relocate to India. Speaking at the 2017 budget defense of the Federal Ministry of Communications in Abuja, Nnaji explained that it would amount to undermining the country with a higher dimension of security challenges if such is allowed.

8. No fewer than 300 protesters led by the President, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Chinonso Obasi, on Thursday stormed Abuja, demanding the prosecution and imprisonment of the Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Prof Francis Otunta. The aggrieved students accused the VC of fraud and bad governance

9. The Youth wing of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday condemned calls for the resignation of Ohanaeze President General, Chief John Nnia Nwodo. In a press statement issued in Enugu yesterday, the national and publicity secretaries of the Ohanaeze Youths, Comrade Okwu Nnabuike and Obinna Adibe, respectively, described the call as reckless.

10. Report says President Muhammadu Buhari has sacked officers and men of the Nigerian Army as his bodyguard and restored the officials of the Department of State Security Service, DSS. Report says Buhari gave the directive shortly before he proceeded on his annual vacation to London, United Kingdom on January 19.
