Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Naira has continued to fall freely as it sold for N516 per United States dollar on Thursday. The currency was N510/dollar earlier on Wednesday. Report says dealers in Lagos Island sold the greenback at N516 and bought same for N513. The situation was the same at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

2. Former Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on New Media, Reno Omokri, has stated that the federal government performs better whenever President Muhammadu Buhari is not in the country. He also commended Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, for taking charge of affairs and effectively governing the country. He cited some examples of the VP’s positive actions and comments on his facebook page.

3. The first meeting of National Economic Council, NEC, in 2017 held yesterday at the presidential villa, Abuja. The meeting, however, ended on a cheerful note as Governor Mimiko and the Ondo State Governor-elect, Rotimi Akeredolu, hugged each other to the delight of the Council. This attracted a huge round of applause from Osinbajo, Governors and others in the meeting.

4. Report says London Police have opened investigations into the case of alleged fraud, involving a former Premier League footballer, who lost £3.9million to Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), owned by Matthew Ashimolowo. According to the report, ex Charlton Athletic player, Richard Rufus, lost the money in a disastrous investment scheme.

5. A Nigerian Airforce (NAF) helicopter conveying personnel on medical outreach programme at Gwoza came under attack Thursday morning by members of the Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) group. Air Force spokesman, Group Captain, Ayodele Famuyiwa, in a statement said the Mi-17 helicopter was shot at severally by the insurgents but landed safely at its destination. The military consequently mobilized to the location, killing several BHT members.

6. A Lagos Federal High Court, on Thursday ordered the forfeiture of of about N34bn linked to former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke. Justice Muslim Hassan, who had on January 6, 2017 issued an interim forfeiture order on the funds gave a final forfeiture order on Thursday’s court proceedings.

7. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer, Oluwafemi Ojo, and his wife, who were abducted by some gunmen suspected to be kidnappers on Saturday along Ogotun-Igbara Odo Road in Ekiti West local government area, have regained their freedom after spending 4 days with their abductors. N1.5m was reportedly paid as ransom before they were released.

8. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has revealed that himself, president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki and leader of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, discussed national issues when they visited President Muhammadu Buhari in London. Dogara in a tweet said the delegation discussed national issues with the President in the United Kingdom. He also said President Buhari was as fit as a fiddle and cracked jokes in his usual manner.

9. Abdullahi Abubakar, a suspended police inspector has again defeated the Inspector General of Police and Police Service Commission (PSC) in court. The Federal Industrial Court, Kano, yesterday, for the second time, ordered the IG and PSC to pay the applicant’s accumulated entitlements. Abubakar who was suspended from police in 1995 had instituted a legal action against the IG and the commission for unlawful suspension.

10. The National Economic Council, NEC, has directed the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to fix the worrisome state of foreign exchange rate. NEC stated this yesterday at its first meeting of the year, presided over by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, SAN. NEC called for an urgent review of the current policy, especially the gap between interbank and the parallel market rates.
