1. A former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has stated that the current government, led by President Muhammadu Buhari worsened the “very bad” economic situation it inherited from Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
According to him, it would take nothing short of a miracle for the Federal Government to return the naira to its exchange rate to the dollar as of the time Buhari took over on May 29, 2015.
2. It was indeed end of the road for notorious kidnaper, Henry Chibueze, aka Vampire, as he was gunned down by the police during a gun duel on Thursday.
A gang member said to be Vampire’s second-in-command, 26-year-old Obinna Elah, who hails from Orlu Local Government Area of the state, was however, arrested in a joint operation carried out by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team and the state police command.
3. At least, six persons have been allegedly killed in a renewed crisis between farmers and Fulani herdsmen at Gbemacha ward in the Gwer Local Government Area of Benue State.
According to an eyewitness, the herdsmen had, in the last few weeks, besieged the community with herds of cattle numbering about 5,000, which have destroyed cassava farms in the area.
4. The National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji All Modu Sheriff has ruled out stepping down as one of the options in the search for political solution to the party’s leadership crisis.
Key stakeholders in the party have been harping on a vague concept of “political solution” without being explicit on details of the concept.
Sheriff was reacting to a media report indicating that former President Goodluck Jonathan had asked him and the rival Caretaker Committee chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi to step down and allow the party’s governors to nominate another chairman.
5. According to reports, the Nigerian currency- naira has crashed to N458 per dollar and other currencies as against the N455 it closed March 1.
The Naira also weakened to N540 against the Pound from the previous rate of N535 and to N475 against the Euro as against the previous rate of N460.
6. Leaders of the South-South and South-East geo-political zones, such as Edwin Clark, John Nwodo and others have called for restructuring of Nigeria.
According to them, the situation where some people were reduced to second class citizens was not good for the image of the country.
7. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari has been away from the country longer than expected.
The party’s spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, said this at the end of their National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, which had some Governors in attendance.
8. The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, will be temporarily closed from midnight on Tuesday, March 7, 2017.
FAAN’s managing director, Saleh Dunoma said this would enable the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), carry out major rehabilitation of the runway at the airport.
9. Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has opined that it was high time politicians started swearing with deities before assuming any office.
According to him, Quoran and Bible are too merciful to deal with any politician who errs.
10. The Department of the State Services, DSS, has released the national commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, Dickson Akoh.
The DSS, which had picked up Akoh and 49 other members of the corps, asked them to go home after rigorous interrogation.
