1. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its presidential candidate in the last election, Atiku Abubakar were on Thursday granted one of their requests at the Presidential Election Tribunal.
This is as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, finally presented before the court cartons of documents as requested by the PDP and Atiku. The lawyer to the PDP and Atiku, Chris Uche, SAN, received documents contained in about 45 cartons, brought to the court’s sitting venue on Thursday.
2. The President of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Amaju Pinnick, has been removed as the Confederation of African Football, CAF, 1st vice president. Pinnick was removed from the position during the body’s Executive Committee meeting in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday.
3. The Coalition of Northern Group (CNG) has said President Muhammadu Buhari and his government would be held responsible should any northerner fall victim of the consequences of the concerns they raised about the safety of Fulani herdsmen in the southern part of the country. The group’s spokesman, Abdul-Aziz Suleiman said in a statement yesterday that while they welcome the assurance by the President, they were not lost in the fact that the lives of their kinsmen was under threat in the southern part of the country.
4. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday described the order by the House of Representatives asking the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to shut down the Edo State House of Assembly as unconstitutional. The party described the order as provocative, saying it has no place in a democratic dispensation. It cautioned the leadership of House of Representatives to desist from actions that violated the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and could trigger a constitutional crisis in Edo and the nation at large.
5. The Benue State House of Assembly has confirmed the 15 commissioner nominees presented to it by Governor Samuel Ortom. The confirmation followed eight hours of intense screening of the nominees by the lawmakers during plenary on Thursday. The nominees include Mr Michael Gusa, Mr David Olofu, Prof. Dennis Ityavyar, Mr Bernard Unenge, Mr Dennis Ogbu, Mr Merga Kachina, Mrs Ladi Isegbe, Mrs Ngunan Adingi.
6. A Nigerian Iman, Abubakar Abdullahi, was yesterday honoured with US International Religious Freedom Award for risking his own life to save some Christians in Jos. The Muslim cleric hid 262 Christians in his mosque and home from alleged Fulani herdsmen in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, during June 2018 clashes. Iman Abdullahi was honoured alongside other recipients of the award from Cyprus, Sudan, Brazil, and Iraq. Speaking at the ceremony, the U.S. Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo, commended the heroic efforts of the freedom advocates.
7. The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday, said it has upheld the expulsion of the party’s National Vice Chairman (North West), Malam Inuwa Abdulkadir by the party organs in Sokoto State over alleged anti-party activities. The ruling party said this in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu in Abuja on Thursday.
8. The U.S. and Nigeria, in Abuja on Thursday signed a Declaration of Partnership to inaugurate a five-year Feed the Future Nigeria Country Plan aimed at ensuring food security. Feed the Future is a U.S. government initiative coordinated by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The initiative seeks to sustainably reduce global poverty, malnutrition, and hunger.
9. Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana, yesterday, called for an amendment of the Constitution, in order to allow retired judges to handle election petitions. Falana suggested this in a statement issued on Thursday. He said over 350 judges drawn from State High Courts, Federal High Court and National Industrial Court who are handling election petitions, have adjourned all matters pending in their courts “sine die.”
10. The Senator representing Benue South Senatorial District, Comrade Patrick Abba Moro, yesterday, said that despite being a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, he would support every policy of President Muhammadu Buhari aimed at addressing the problems confronting the Nigerian people. Moro stressed the need for lawmakers of the ninth National Assembly to work together, regardless of party affiliation, to bring the dividends of democracy to the doorsteps of Nigerians who willingly elected them to be their representatives.
