Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The presidency has disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari will return to Nigeria today, Friday March 10, 2017. This was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina. Adesina, however, did not give the exact time of the president’s return.

2. The Naira on Thursday appreciated reasonably against the dollar at the parallel market. The currency exchange at N455 to a dollar, after it closed at N465 on Wednesday, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N550 and N477, respectively. It exchanged 305 to a dollar at the inter-market.

3. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced dates for 2019 general elections. In a statement issued on Thursday, the electoral commission said the 2019 Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on Saturday, 16th February 2019, while the Governorship/State Assembly/Federal Capital Territory Area Council Elections will hold on Saturday 2nd March 2019.

4. Report says Ms. Stephanie Otobo, the alleged mistress of Apostle Johnson Suleman of Omega Fire Ministry was on Thursday released from the Kirikiri prison in Lagos. Suleman has consequently slammed N1bn damages on Festus Keyamo, lawyer to Miss Stephanie Otobo.

5. Report says President Muhammadu Buhari returned to the country . The report claims the president arrived around 4am. He reportedly landed in Kaduna airport and was conveyed in a chopper to the Presidential Villa.

6. The embattled National Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Ali Modu has cautioned governor of Ekiti state, Ayo Fayose, and other members of the party constantly make derogatory remarks about him to desist from such, else he will react. He gave the warning at a news conference organized by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party in Abuja.

7. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condemned the Amnesty International report that accused Nigerian Army of human rights abuses and violations in North East of Nigeria, wondering why a respected international organization of high repute like Amnesty International will issue out reports without making findings from those on ground.

8. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has re-arraigned three directors of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, Gregory Eriyanremu, Frank Ugen and Harriman Isa Oyofo before Justice Uloho of the Delta State High Court sitting in Warri for allegedly diverting over N100 million meant for payments of contractors to personal account.

9. A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Maitama, on Thursday sentenced to death two ex-policemen, Ezekiel Acheneje and Emmanuel Baba, after being found guilty for the death of two of the six auto spare part traders shot dead in Area 11 of Garki, Abuja, on June 7, 2005. After several years of trial, the presiding judge, Justice Ishaq Bello, convicted the two ex-cop of culpable homicide punishable by death under section 221(a) of the Penal Code Act.

10. Report says the nation’s external reserve has risen to $30 billion, the highest in 13 months. The rise is by $4.2 billion since the beginning of the year, and by $6.2 billion since October 19th, 2016 when it commenced its upward trend.
