Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Naira remains on the path of recovery as it exchanged 385 to the dollar on the black market Thursday. On the official interbank market, the Naira closed at 308 to the dollar, against 306 last Thursday. It has, however been predicted that the currency will continue to improve against the dollar if the CBN continues with its current policy.

2. A Lagos State High Court sitting in Igbosere, Thursday sentenced Ezekiel Eloka and Echezona Nwabufor to death by hanging for the murder of Cynthia Osokogu, who they lured from Nasarawa to Lagos before strangulating her to death at a hotel in Festac Town, Lagos, in 2012. Delivering her judgement, Justice Olabisi Akinlade declared that the testimonies of prosecution witnesses, and confessional statements the deceased made to the police, showed that the accused were guilty of killing Ms. Osokogu.

3. The Senate, on Thursday rejected the nomination of two non-career ambassadorial nominees President Muhammadu Buhari forwarded to them for screening. Those rejected by the Upper Legislative Chambers are Justice Sylvanus Nsofor from Imo State and Mr Jacob Daodu from Ondo State.

4. President Muhammadu Buhari has sent names of 28 nominees to the Senate for confirmation as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He made this known in a letter addressed to the National Assembly which was read by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, during plenary on Thursday.

5. Report has it that he kidnappers of a classroom teacher in Ekiti State, Mr. Festus Olatunde Oke, have demanded a ransom of N20million for his release. The report says the family members were contacted on Wednesday, two days after Mr. Oke was abducted.The wife of the victim had equally alleged that her husband’s kidnappers were Fulani herdsmen.

6. Members of the House of Representatives have described the Kaduna International Airport as a big disaster waiting to happen. The members faulted the aviation ministry for allowing operations at the airport, when it is clear that it falls short of the safety standards for both domestic and international flight operations.

7. A building under construction, allegedly belonging to an Enugu State Government official, collapsed on Thursday. Report says the building which belongs to a principal officer of the Enugu House of Assembly collapsed while workers were on site working. It was gathered that in the ensuing confusion, some of the workers quickly jumped down from the last floor where they were working and a number of them were severely injured.

8. Report says one of the bullets fired by soldiers attached to 707 Special Forces Brigade in Makurdi, Benue State, has killed a secondary school pupil, identified as Ayew Atume. The report says Atume, a resident of Jato Aka in the Kwande Local Government Area of the state, was having a lunch in his parents’ compound after returning from school on Tuesday when the stray bullet hit him.

9. A pan-Yoruba group, Oodua People’s Congress, has given the Federal Government and the Nigeria Police Force 48 hours to arrest the Fulani/Hausa persons involved in the crisis in Ile-Ife, Osun State, which resulted in the death of about 46 persons. The OPC gave the warning in a statement by its founder, Dr. Fredrick Fasehun, on Thursday. The group condemned arrest of just Yoruba suspects.

10. The international friendly match between Nigeria and Senegal on Thursday ended in a 1-1 draw. There was no goals in the first half, but Fenerbahce’s Moussa Sow opened scoring in the second half, to give Senegal the lead. Kelechi Iheanacho, however, equalized in the 83rd minute of the game.
