Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Justice Muslim Hassan of the Federal High Court in Lagos, on Thursday ordered the temporary forfeiture of the sums of $43,449,947, £27,800 and N23,218,000 uncovered from a house in Ikoyi, Lagos State on Wednesday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. He said the money should be forfeited to the Federal Government. In his ruling, Justice Hassan held that anyone interested in the huge sum should appear before him to show cause why the money should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.

2. The National Bureau of Statistics on Thursday, revealed that inflation dropped by 0.52 percent in March, the second decline recorded on the year- on- year basis. In its latest Consumer Price Index for March released in Abuja, the bureau stated that the index, which measured inflation increased by 17.26 per cent year-on-year.

3. Two officers of the Nigerian army were yesterday killed in Bayelsa State after they responded to a distress call. The Army said they suffered casualty when they exchanged fires with heavily armed sea pirates. Spokesperson for the Army, Major Abubakar Abdullahi, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to newsmen.

4. Following the directive by the General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, Maj.-Gen. Adamu Abubakar, troops of the 93 Battalion, Taraba State, have begun a manhunt for a suspected terror kingpin, Tawase Agwaza (aka Gana), who had been declared wanted for various criminal offences in Benue State. The order was to get the suspect alive.

5. President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointments of Chief Executives and Directors for twenty three Federal Government Agencies. The list was released Thursday night. The names of the new appointees and the agencies can be found in this link

6. The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has approved the commencement of an additional diet in its examination for private candidates. WAEC Registrar, Dr Iyi Uwadiae, confirmed this at a news conference in Lagos on Thursday. Uwadiae explained that this was to remedy the issue of perceived discrimination or denial of equal opportunity to private candidates.

7. A former Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Esther Nnamdi-Ogbue, has denied owning the apartment where the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, uncovered over $50m in Ikoyi, Lagos State. Nnamdi-Ogbue while speaking through her lawyer, Emeka Etiaba frowned at the report, saying there was no need for conjecture.

8. Justice Gabriel Kolawole of the Federal High Court in Abuja has insisted that the trial of Colonel Nicholas Ashinze, a former Aide to Colonel Sambo Dasuki and 7 others in alleged N1.5bn fraud would not be resumed until the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) retracts fully the misrepresentation of the court’s proceedings that the defendants are being tried for N36.8bn fraud. The judge dismissed the oral claim by the counsel to EFCC, Mr Ofem Uket that the anti-graft agency had retracted the offending publication because the lawyer failed to produce any document or evidence before the court to ascertain the claim.

9. Reports says the Lagos State Police Command on Thursday lost three of its men and two community leaders after some gunmen attacked Oko-Asagun village in the Ibeju Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos. The gunmen also abducted four workers of two telecommunications companies in the area. Other persons were also injured in the attack.

10. National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic (PDP), Ali Modu Sheriff has alleged that the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike gave former President, Goodluck Jonathan N50 million to organise the recent stakeholders meeting in Abuja. Sheriff who spoke through his deputy, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh at a news conference at the party’s secretariat on Thursday, said Governors Wike and Fayose recruited Jonathan into a fake peace effort pre-determined to scuttle ongoing peace initiative in the party.
