1. The Naira on Thursday gained N2 against the dollar at the parallel market as it traded N386 to the dollar, stronger than the N388 it closed on Wednesday. The pound sterling and the Euro closed at N495 and N425, respectively. At the Bureau De Change (BDC), the naira was N362 to the dollar, while the pound sterling and the Euro exchanged for N492 and N423, respectively.
2. Nigerian Government on Thursday suspended the embattled Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Technology Akwure, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola and his counterpart at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Prof. Olusola Oyewole over corruption allegations.
3. The Federal Government disclosed on Thursday, that some of the schoolgirls released by Boko Haram militants over the weekend would need surgery for various ailments. The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Jummai Alhassan, at a press conference in Abuja said that the girls were undergoing treatment that would take a few weeks to complete.
4. The Christian Association of Nigeria has protested against the participation of the country in the ongoing 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku, Azerbaijan. CAN asked the Federal Government to immediately withdraw the country’s athletes from the tournament. According to the General Secretary of CAN, Musa Asake, the participation of the country in the Games contravenes Nigeria’s secular status as the competition is exclusively for Muslim countries.
5. The nation’s 2017 budget was Thursday passed by the National Assembly. This followed the presentation of the joint Committee on Appropriations and Finance report to the Senate as well as that of the House of Representatives. The nation’s budget in the tune of N7.441 was passed after the presentations.
6. Contrary to insinuations at different quarters of President Buhari undermining the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, he has said that President Muhammadu Buhari treats him like his son. He was arrested for calling for support for the General Overseer, Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman.
8. Prominent legal practitioner, Festus Keyamo, has written to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, narrating how his men “kidnapped” wife of a businessman, Mrs Ovwighodua Odebala. In an open letter by B.I. Dakum, a counsel, and John Ainetor, Assistant Head of Festus Keyamo Chambers, Abuja, the lawyers expressed their client’s “reservation on the mode of investigation being carried out by the police thus far.” The chamber also requested that a fresh investigation be ordered into the incident directly from the office of the IG to forestall any cover-up.
9. Nollywood Actress, Mercy Aigbe who is currently in a legal tussle with her husband, Lanre Gentry over domestic violence has said that she still wants to build a home with her husband, adding that they just need some help. She said her outcry was to get help for her husband who gets physical at a slightest provocation.
10. The Federal Government has said the country has recorded 13,420 cases of cerebrospinal meningitis and 1,069 deaths have been recorded in 23 states. It noted that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) had intervened, leading to decline in some states. Technical Assistant in the NCDC, Dr. Lawal Bakare, in a statement promised that the Federal Government and its partners would continue to work to reduce the effect of the current outbreak in affected communities.
