Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

1. Pandemonium broke out at the Ondo State House of Assembly Complex on Thursday following the appearance of three snakes at the hallowed chamber of the Assembly complex. DAILY POST gathered that the snakes fell from the ceiling of the hallowed chamber during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt Hon. Bamidele Oleyelogun.

The situation which caused panic among the lawmakers abruptly brought the plenary to an end as they hurriedly rushed out from the chamber.

2. The Federal Government has reportedly commenced negotiations with the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, over their demand for the release of their detained leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, who has been held in security custody since 2015. According to a source, the Federal Government has issued approval to mediators drawn from members of the diplomatic corps to meet with Sheikh El-Zakzaky with a view to resolving the impasse between the Islamic group and the Nigerian authorities.

3. The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) on Thursday said it will release the May/June result WASSCE for school candidates on Friday (today). The exam body confirmed this in a statement by its Head. of Public Affairs, Demianus Ojijeogu on Thursday.

4. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday finally issued Certificate of Return to Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the Imo North Senatorial District election. Uwajumogu was issued the certificate at about 4p.m. at INEC Headquarters in Abuja.

5. Federal Government has commenced negotiations with the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, over their demand for the release of their detained leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky who has been held in security custody since 2015, a source has claimed. This development was confirmed to DAILY POST on Thursday by a source within the top hierarchy of IMN in Abuja. According to the source, the Federal Government has issued approval to mediators drawn from members of the diplomatic corps to meet with Sheikh El-Zakzaky with a view to resolving the impasse between the Muslim group and the Nigerian authorities.

6. Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, on Thursday said the United States, US, should extend its Visa restriction to President Muhammadu Buhari, the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi. It also named the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Uche Secondus, former Minority Leader, Godswill Akapbio as part of those who should be banned by the US.

7. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Thursday inaugurated a study group on survey of critical issues and challenges on the conduct of the 2019 general elections.

The commission announced this in a statement issued by its Director of Publicity and Voter Education, Mr Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi. It said that this was part of the interest in a more scientific approach to the assessment of issues and challenges faced in the conduct of the general elections.

8. The Rivers State Police Command, on Thursday confirmed the death of a three-man armed robbery gang in Port Harcourt. Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni in a statement said Operatives of the Swift Operations Squad, acting on credible information intercepted the armed gang along Birabi street in GRA Phase Two, Port Harcourt.

9. The Nigerian Air Force on Thursday, announced the promotion of Aircraftman Bashir Umar, who returned €37,000 found in a parcel at Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano. He was promoted two levels, from Aircraftman to the rank of Corporal, a promotion that would have taken him ten years to achieve. Umar, who is a member of the NAF Mobile Air Defence Team deployed at the airport on security duties, found the parcel during a routine patrol with some of his colleagues. He discovered the parcel at the airport’s Hajj Camp Market on July 16, and with a telephone number he found on it, he reached the owner, one Alhaji Ahmad, and handed the parcel to him.

10. The apex igbo socio-cultural body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Thursday cautioned the Shiite and the Federal Government to be mindful of their actions, so that Boko Haram scenario was not replayed in Nigeria. Chuks Ibegbu, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, who spoke with DAILY POST wondered why the Shiites and President Muhammadu Buhari-led government should use live bullets in confronting each other. The organisation regretted the wanton deaths that occurred in Abuja as a result of the conflict between the two parties.
