Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has been scraped by the Senate. This follows the passage of Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB) into law by the Nigerian senate. In place of NNPC, the Senate recommended the establishment of three new agencies to effectively manage the oil and gas sector.

2. Nigerian​ Government has declared Monday, May 29th as ​public ​holiday to celebrate the 2017 Democracy Day. Minister of Interior​,​ Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau​, while announcing this in a press statement ​congratulated Nigerians for another Democracy Day.

3. Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has appealed to those agitating for Biafra to shield their struggle as there is enough national cake to share. Speaking at the Biafra conference held in Abuja on Thursday, Obasanjo said that dialogue is the only way to resolving the issue of agitation for an independent Igbo nation.

4. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has disclosed that it has seized a mansion and some other properties allegedly owned by a godson to former President, Goodluck Jonathan, George Turnah. He is standing trial for an alleged N3bn fraud. The commission revealed that it has also froze about seven bank accounts through which the suspect allegedly received billions of naira.

5. Report has it that the Naira yesterday appreciated by N3 against the dollar, selling at N376 per dollar in the parallel market. However, the external reserve fell to $30.52 billion yesterday from $30.7.

6. Gunmen on Thursday abducted six pupils of Igbonla Model College, Epe, Lagos. Report says the gunmen gained entry into the school premises around 6am on Thursday through the creek at the back of the college, pulled down the fence and abducted pupils identified as Peter Jonah, Isiaq Rahmon, Adebayo George, Judah Agbausi, Pelumi Philips and Farouq Yusuf.

7. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has said it will not release results of candidates engaged in malpractices during the last exams and identified in footages of Close Circuit Television, CCTV. This was disclosed by JAMB Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede.

8. The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has called for the immediate release of the Chief Executive Officer of Capital Oil and Gas Ltd, Ifeanyi Ubah, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since May 5, 2017. The governor while accusing the DSS of political witch hunt, wondered why the agency needed another 14 days to shop for evidence against Ubah.

9. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has appealed to the House of Representatives to follow the example of the Senate by also passing its version of the Petroleum Industry Bill. The party made the call in Abuja through a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, on Thursday, also commending the APC lawmakers for emphasising reforms in order to transform the country.

10. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released more results of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Speaking yesterday, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede said the agency had released the additional results of 15, 000 candidates, ensuring that JAMB won’t impose any candidate on any school.
