Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has approved the appointment of 14 new Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This is contained in a statement by the Director of Press, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Bolaji Adebiyi.

2. Ohanaeze Ndigbo has distanced itself from comments by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu over the forthcoming Anambra election where he called for the boycott of the elections holding in November. The President-General of Ohanaeze, Chief John Nnia Nwodo said the IPOB leader had breached the undertaking he took before him (Nwodo) when he was released from detention.

3. Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has berated his counterpart from Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose for alleging that President Muhammadu Buhari is on life support. Tagging the Ekiti governor a ‘cheap talker,’ Okorocha urged the public to disregard him as nothing substantial would ever come from him.

4. The Government of the United Kingdom yesterday, deported 28 Nigerians over immigration-related offences. The Nigerians were sent back home few days after 23 Nigerians were deported from Spain and five days after another batch of 34 were jointly deported by the governments of Switzerland, Germany, Iceland, Austria, Belgium and Hungary.

5. Arrested billionaire kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike a.k.a. Evans, Thursda filed a fresh suit against the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Idris Ibrahim and three others at a Federal High Court in Lagos over his alleged illegal detention. Evans in the suit filed on his behalf by his father is demanding N300 million for general and exemplary damages.

6. The police has said that arrangements to prosecute the suspected killer of Joy Odama, a 200 level student of Cross River State University of Science and Technology have been concluded.It said in a press briefing on Thursday that even though the latest autopsy report showed that Miss Odama died of cabon monoxide poisoning from generator fumes, the suspect, Alhaji Usman Adamu would still be prosecuted.

7. The Presidency has explained why that the Presidential jet would remain in London where President Muhammadu Buhari is receiving treatment. A statement made available to newsmen in Abuja by presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, on Thursday said the aircraft was retained in London to maintain protocol, national security, diplomacy and prestige of the country.

8. The Coalition of Northern Groups has dissociated itself from a statement credited to a certain Arewa Coalition which alleged that the Yoruba nation was imposing the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo on the nation, warning that any statement not credited to its leaders must not be linked to it. This contained in a statement issued by the group’s spokesman, Abudl-Azeez Suleiman on Thursday.

9. Report has it that a lecturer with the Ogun State College of Health Technology, Ilese Ijebu, Dr Seyi Adu, has been suspended indefinitely by the college for allegedly having sex with a nursing student of the school, Mosunmola. The report further claimed that the suspension was placed on a notice board, directing the academic community not to have any dealings with him.

10. Germany are now through to the final of the ongoing Confederation Cup after they defeated Mexico 4-1 in their Semi-final match on Thursday night. They will now face Chile in the final of the competition on Sunday at St. Petersburg.
