Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

1. The Senator representing Kogi West in the Senate has disclosed that the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has suspended his recall. According to him, the High Court said the status quo should be followed in the recall process. No other details were provided by the lawmaker regarding the case.

2. The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Thursday alleged that former President, Olusegun Obasanjo was plotting to assassinate its leader, Nnamdi Kanu through a military coup. It said the coup will also overthrow the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government. IPOB claimed that Obasanjo plots to use the military to create coup that will lead to the assassination of Kanu.

3. The Nigerian Air Force, NAF, has confirmed the crash of its helicopter on Thursday. NAF disclosed that the helicopter crashed into a pool of water in Maiduguri, Borno state, on Thursday. Spokesperson of NAF, Olatokunbo Adesanya, who made the disclosure said no life was lost in the incident. In a statement he signed, Adesnaya said the Chief of Air Staff, Sadique Abubakar, has constituted a panel of inquiry to unravel the cause of the crash.

4. Wife of immediate past President ,Goodluck Jonathan, Patience Jonathan, on Thursday accused security agencies of harassing his family. The former First Lady is seeking the intervention of the House of Representatives to call operatives of various agencies investigating and harassing her family to order.

5. The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee on Thursday, elevated 30 lawyers to the status of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) including Lagos lawyer, Festus Keyamo. Others in the list are the Alliance for Democracy (AD) candidate in the last governorship candidate in Ondo State, Chief Olusola Oke and Akinlolu Osinbajo, the brother to the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo.

6. About fourteen passengers travelling from Warri in Delta State to Port-Harcourt, the Rivers State capital have been allegedly kidnapped by gunmen at Rumoji, near Port-Harcourt in Rivers State. Report says that the heavily armed gunmen waylaid the bus, which belongs to a popular transport company, and dragged all the occupants into a nearby bush from where they were whisked to an unknown destination.

7. The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has assured residents of Ikorodu axis in the state that his administration will curb the activities of the dreaded cult group, Badoo. Ambode gave the assurance on Thursday while commissioning a rehabilitated fire service station in Epe. The Governor said that he did not believe that the Badoo members were spirits and could disappear.

8. The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, on Thursday ‘attacked’ Senator Danjuma Goje, stressing that the legislator’s utterances and choice of words were unparliamentary and do not deserve a response. The minister regretted that Goje, the Chairman, Committee Chairman on Appropriation, trivialised the issues he raised about the unilateral slashing of the budgetary allocation to key national infrastructure by the National Assembly.

9. The family of Chief Yusuf Ogundare, the Baale of Sangisha, Magodo, Lagos State, has said his abduction is connected to the rivalry between him and another traditional ruler in the community, Oba Jamiu Lawal. A report quoted his brother as raising the allegation.

10. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said that all candidates for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Examination (UTME) must register under the lenses of the CCTV Camera. It also said the footage of registration processes of each candidate must be uploaded to the Board Headquarters. This is part of fresh standardization rules, guidelines and registration processes issued to licensed operators of Computer Based Test (CBT) centres on Thursday.
