1. Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, Wednesday met with President Muhammadu Buhari, in Abuja House, London in company of ex-Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola. The report said the parley between the leaders lasted for about 40 minutes.
2. The Chairman of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, ACF, Shettima Yerima on Thursday insisted that the quit notice asking Igbos to leave the North on October 1 remains sacrosanct. Shettima, however, said Igbos who were willing to remain in the north as Nigerians were welcome.
3. A total of 100 inmates on Thursday, regained their freedom from the Kirikiri Medium Prison, as part of initiatives of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) to decongest the prisons. The Comptroller of Prisons in Lagos State, Mr Tunde Ladipo, informed newsmen in Lagos that most of the affected inmates were arrested for minor offences. According to him, a philanthropist, who has chosen to remain anonymous, offered to settle the fines meted on the inmates.
4. In sports, Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho has officially been unveiled as a Leicester City player. The Super Eagles forward has signed a five-year deal at the King Power Stadium ahead of the new season. Iheanacho will wear the squad no. 8 and has now joined fellow Nigerians -Wilfred Ndidi and Ahmed Musa.
5. Barcelona have accepted the payment of Neymar’s €222 million release clause from Paris Saint-Germain. The club released an official statement on Thursday saying Neymar Jr’s legal representatives visited in person the club’s offices and made the payment of €222m in the player’s name with regards to the unilateral termination of the contract that united both parties.
6. Ahmed Imam, member representing Lokoja 1 constituency in the kogi state House of Assembly Thursday officially resigned as the Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly and Hon. Matthew Kolawole has now taken charge as the new Speaker. His resignation was announced by the Deputy Speaker, Hassan Abdullahi Baiwa, member representing Okura constituency who presided over the House sitting on Thursday.
7. The Naira depreciated yesterday to N365 per dollar in the parallel market. This is due to increase in dollar demand. The parallel market exchange rate rose from N363 per dollar on Wednesday to N365 per dollar yesterday.
8. Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will storm banks whose officials violated internal processes that led to the huge non-performing loans in AMCON’s portfolio. AMCON Managing Director, Ahmed Kuru, and the EFCC Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Mustafa Magu, jointly made the announcement yesterday in Abuja.
AMCON had acquired debts from 22 banks worth N3.7 trillion and provided financial accommodation to 10 banks of about N2.2 trillion.
9. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has alerted Nigerians to the activities of fraudsters who have been extorting heads of ministries, departments and agencies, claiming they were acting at the behest of Ibrahim Magu, its Chairman. The commission said at least three ministers have in the last few weeks drawn the attention of the Commission to the activities of this gang of criminals.
10. The United States of America has finally approved a $593 million sale to Nigeria of A-29 Super Tucano attack planes with associated parts, training, facilities and weapons. Report says the twelve A-29s will be used by Nigeria to combat the Islamist militia Boko Haram and other extremist groups, such as the Islamic State West Africa splinter group. It will also serve to counter smuggling and other trafficking in Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea.
